Well I have been here for so many years now that I lost count but honestly, I never really made friends with any locals either. I work all day and long hours often and I have a family which does not leave much time to socialize. There are some neighbors we are in touch with but not on a regular basis and of course my work colleagues, but that's about it. If you hang out at the pub at least you get to know some of the other expats, which is not too bad. (Did I ever mention I found MG's S-I-L on a barstool in an English pub in Switzerland? )

Re: Trying to figure out what I might be doing wrong

Hi Vaudville girl,

Seriously don't stress. It takes time to get to know people (even expats).
You're doing all the right things. One of the biggest mindset changes I had to make when we moved was to expect to be the one organising and doing the inviting 95% of the time, and if I get a return invite *hooray!*. Don't be pushy and don't take it badly if people turn you down, they just might not click with you or may just be busy. But keep trying. You'll build a network of friends eventually

Glocals is fabulous. And if you're taking French lessons try to get into a class rather than one on one as this also gives you a group of people to go out for coffee with!

If you're crafty come along to the S'n'B I organise on Wednesdays (here's our FB page https://www.facebook.com/snblausanne/info)

Or maybe have a look at the American International Women's Association (http://www.aiwc-lausanne.org/). They have tons of events and groups you can join. It's not to everyones taste but it's a fabulous way to fill your day and/ or meet new people. I'm no longer a member as I've successfully overfilled most of my days but it was indispensable to my sanity when I first got here.

But one way I met tons of people in the same boat as me initially (fresh to the country and desperately trying to make contacts) was at the Living In Lausanne conference (also held by the AIWC). I've looked online and the next one is towards the end of this month. I'd suggest going! If not for the helpful information, definitely to meet new people http://www.aiwc-lausanne.org/LIL_about.php

Good luck!

No burqa. Just an ordinary midwestern woman. No third eye, extra limb, or permanent scowl, either.
Ordinary & mid-western women in the same sentence?!?!!??

Only joking. Maybe.

This is what I meant by AWC. I forgot they added the "international" a few years ago.

There's a regular comedy club which rolls through Lausanne every two weeks. If you enjoy stand up comedy you're sure to find interesting, similarly minded people at the International Comedy Club.

HI,

I think that there is nothing wrong in what you are doing...

Maybe I would add some activities that usually allow people to make connections, such as sports (not huge fitness clubs but small group of specific sports), language classes, other hobbies.
Migros has a big variety of classes for different interests almost everywhere but you can check at your place if there are other local initiatives.

cheers

You could also organise your own coffee morning at the Coop or Migros: if the EF members sign up, then it's on! If not, then try a different day.

Re: Trying to figure out what I might be doing wrong

I discovered Swiss people aren't as standoffish as I first thought but I discovered that by joining a rowing club. Speaking the language really helps too. I heard some Swiss in Geneva say that a lot of foreigners don't make an effort to integrate, they're always socialising with each other and they (the Swiss) know that they are only on a fixed -term assignment as well.

Re: Trying to figure out what I might be doing wrong

Hello and Welcome to Romandie. Like Odile suggested, join a Migros language class, although not always easy if you have little ones.Getting the language going should be your top priority.

You seem to be doing all the right things, and even with the language, it takes longer here to make good friends, simply because people are a little more cautious and less demonstrative in their interactions... It doesn't mean they are not interested, you just need to persevere and be patient. Show interest in all things Switzerland, including your local history. People are more willing to make an effort if they see you take interest in their environment...The Swiss seem to be very proud of their surroundings and generally, they have grounds to be.

In Lausanne, you should have no difficulty making acquaintances soon. Suggest to a couple of people an outing by train or funicular, a little wine tasting or a meal higher up in the mountains will bring a sense of "shared adventure".

Bonne chance!

Re: Trying to figure out what I might be doing wrong

Hi
I'm working in Lausanne but live in Moudon. I have 2 little dogs and am on my own out here as husband is still living in the Uk. Would love to meet up for lunch or coffee anytime in the week and happy to walk dogs together somewhere on weekends anytime. I work right in the centre of Lausanne so can do lunch most days if I'm not travelling or a coffee after work etc. Just drop me a pm. I have a few friends I've met already and they also have a group of friends so can easily introduce you. In fact, we are off to cinema on Sat if you would like to join

Re: Trying to figure out what I might be doing wrong

You are not doing anything wrong. I think it even happens wherever you go. I lived in France and it was the same thing, and then the US is pretty much the same experience. I even met several French speaking people that told me they where having a hard time meeting people here.

The reality is that you have to put on an effort. A lot of the suggestions made above are good. So join outdoor clubs, keep doing stuff with glocals, onvasortir, and other clubs. I am new in Fribourg, and haven't met a lot of people after almost 3 months, but I have organized a language exchange on Wednesdays and a lot of people have shown up. So increase your exposure to meeting people... get yourself out there. Another thing that worked for me was taking French language lessons. You'll make several friends there... all foreigners of course. Making friends with the locals tend to be much complicated due to language and cultural barriers.

Good luck!!
