Alpabzug: Recommendations

Would any of you know which is the nearest place from Baden Or Zurich where we can witness the Alpabzug of this year? Also, will it be a good idea to book a B&B for the 22nd Sep weekend i.e., reach on friday evening, stay at the B&B and then witness the Alpabzug on saturday or just reaching saturday morning will also be fine?

We have no other plans other than seeing the cows coming down.

Einsiedeln is quite close to Zurich, though the other side if you are in the Baden area. You should ring the tourist info there. There should be plenty of places to stay as they are used to visitors for the monastery.

The most picturesque Alpabfahrt can be seen in the Appezellerland. You may also visit one of the cows market (German link, as English one is missing dates)

Re: Alpabzug: Recommendations

Hello!

Also looking for tips for the best Alpabzug/Alpabfahrt to go and visit. With regards to the Appenzeller abfahrts there seems to be many, starting with one this (15th September) in Urnäsch. Has anyone been to this one? Is it a "big" event?

I'm looking to find one that has a decent sized procession, if anyone has any recommendations please let me know!

Is the Einsiedeln one good? My parents will be over from the UK that weekend and, even though they have been coming over for the last 15 years, have not been here at the right time to see an Alpabzug yet. Einsiedeln is an easy train ride from where I live so it would be a good option.

Re: Alpabzug: Recommendations

Ignore my previous message, it looks like Einsiedeln is this coming weekend (15th September).

Re: Alpabzug: Recommendations

Its cows going down a hill with flowers behind their ears and big bells round the neck. So if that is your thing... it is good. And their seemed to be a big pasture with a mahoosive bull and so on. Quite fun actually. And then Einsiedeln monastery is itself imposing, the old town picturesque and then you have a great lake nearby. Always good value for money.

I only passed the cows down the hill ceremony by chance when my parents were over. We were surrounded in the car, quite surreal all in all.

Re: Alpabzug: Recommendations

Does anyone know the time you need to be there to see the best part(s)? The Urnäsch one seems to run from 7am to 1pm. Being there from the start would mean a very early start to the day - would like to know if that is really necessary, or whether one can arrive a little later on and still see a good show?
