thats a bit too vague i think for any sensible answer.
will all the children be attending the same international school? and which one? or is that still open?
is a commute by one or both parents a consideration?
whats important to your family? space, close to public transport, etc.

Thanks in advance | | | | | What is an ig family? Big? Pretty high income is also vague. 150K, 200K, 250K, 1M? Finding a place to live (that is affordable) in Freienbach is going to be hard. Finding a place for 6 people, if you want 5 bedrooms, will be near impossible not only in Freienbach, but most of CH, I would think. Check out homegate.ch for housing to start with ...

Sounds like you need a relocation agent. At least they can show you round some areas and available accommodation.

community. Horgen is a decent place to live but a little
boring but less expensive then Thalwil.
We live in Baar and love it. The Zug International School
is here. We also like being separated from Zürich yet only
be 25 minutes from Zürich HBf.
Where will you be working?

Live in nanny? How many rooms you want to have? Rents for a house can easily go over 5000 CHF a month, if you can even find one...I have seen ones for more than 10K a month. Really, a budget would be good to know!
For an example, here is a search on homegate with a 10 km radius from Horgen, for a "house" with more than 6.5 rooms. That should give you 5 different rooms...not sure where you are coming from and what sizes you are used to - if it is the US then housing/space is much more limited here. Rents range from 3 K for 140 m2 (apartments or old houses) to 15.5 K per month, with free-standing or "good size" houses more in the 6k+ range. Take a look-see...

Also, what is the best ime to look at houses if the actual move can happen in summer? When most people leave and listings come available?

As is summer 2013? Usually it is just a few months ahead of time, but the high end market might be different. Do you not have a relo person to take care of this stuff for you?

No, i don't. This a private relocation, and i am trying o grasp the best solution. A few years ago we lived in ruschlikon where now is not an option as there are no big houses available that close to Zurich. We are exploring more practical, yet more comfortable options for active kids where we are not living on top of each other on a apartment overlooking a ake also low taxes are increasingly more important due to the income

Seriously Rig, use a relocation agent.
To find a free-standing house with 6+ rooms you will need more than mere money - you need a professional on your side. These properties are few and far between.
All the areas you mention are nice, they each have their pluses and minuses. With the exception of Zug, they are all pretty much ZH suburbs, offering a suburban lifestyle. Take from that what you will. At your salary you should consider the tax differences of the locations you mention.
I live in Ausserschwyz and like it - but it's not to everyone's taste. I hate city life, have no desire to trip the light fantastic, prefer to live auf dem Land. My idea of great entertainment is curling up in front of the fire with my dogs, listening to cowbells. But I've come to the conclusion that my little Dorf has become far too citified of late (there are now fewer cows than people ) and hope to move out.
But if night life is important to your family, you may wish to live closer in to the city.
What are the ages of your children - this will be a big factor. If teenagers, consider carefully not only schools but also their entertainment options and the degree of independence you are comfortable with.
And - have you already hired your nanny? If not... think about the difficulty of hiring when you live far out. My neighbor goes through about 3 nannies a year - it can be difficult to to find young person willing to live far from after-work entertainment.
Best of luck to you and your family.

When we lived in Ruschlikon, we all said how great it is to be so close by ZH, but in reality i used to go to the city twice a month at the most. We lived very uncomfortable in a apartment that was too small for many kids. Zug seems nice too. I started thinking we are better off further out, but i have no experience or knowldege about life there? Also, i am still debating whether kids go to local school after attending english international school? How is it doable for a third grader to enter a locAl school with no german?
