English orphanages in Zurich?

Hi,

I'm 17 and looking to volunteering in an orphange in Zurich once or twice a week for several months. I was wondering if anyone knew any English (as I've only been living in Zurich a year and am not very good with my German) speaking orphanages or projects working with children.

Thank you in advance,

Caroline

Re: English orphanages in Zurich?

I would be very surprised if there is an orphanage in Switzerland. I'd expect there is a system for foster care that means children are looked after in private homes...

Working with children, I'd suggest you try the local 'gemeinschaftzentrum' (community centre) or 'hort' (after school care) programmes and see if they take volunteers.

You could also try contacting the red cross to do their babysitter training, and do a first aid course as well. Those are good steps towards working with children. The 'samariters' offer first aid courses in german, or in english, and particularly one 'first aid for small children' which is not very expensive...

Crikey. I didn't know orphanages still existed! Sounds like something from a Charles Dickens story.

The OP could see if there is any work offered in daycares or Tageshorte in the city but I think most people working with children need to be qualified in some kind of childcare.

Re: English orphanages in Zurich?

There is an English-speaking group for mothers and children in Uster by the name of "Women's Activity Club" or "WAC." Perhaps they could use a volunteer.
