Another Brit missing in CH

Just seen on BBC London TV news, that a British man, Dan Hunt, has gone missing in the Swiss Alps, whilst speed flying in and around the Lauterbrunnen valley.

Seems to be an accident, as opposed to a disappearance.

I'm starting to wonder if there's a group of survivalists who have gained access to one of the military's hidden mountain caves and are, one by one, becoming holed up, waiting for doomsday to come; judging by the disappearances in that general vicinity.

One of the downsides of doing a sport with a risk of death, is a risk of death.

That's really good news. I just hope that he didn't have to gnaw his arm off to get out of the crevice, I have no desire to watch a movie called "127 Hours II - The Rocks Strike Back".

Re: Another Brit missing in CH

do you think this kind of experience will have taught him something?
just the other day a pregnant woman died base-jumping on what should have been her "farewell" jump.

http://elitedaily.com/elite/2012/pre...te-fails-open/

WHY??? I guess us boring mortals will never be able to understand the kick.

anyway, in his 127 hours down there he certainly had the opportunity to think about changing to a less dangerous hobby, like ikebana or stamp collection.

If I had a friend or relative into this I'd be trying very hard to talk them out of it. Life is risky enough without taking up russian roulette as a hobby...

Except in this case, the man was Speed flying and not BASE jumping.

Re: Another Brit missing in CH

Well, I lost a friend last July on a paragliding accident in France, and I think she knew the risks and there was no way anyone could have talked her out of her hobby. These sports can be very addictive and one doesn't realize the dangers until there's a close call. As far as this guy goes, it would be interesting to hear if he would consider continuing this sport. Most likely he already lost his self confidence on flying, and it will take a long time to regain it if he gets back into it again. Who knows, some people never learn. But then it is also true that there are many different ways one can croak. Just today, I was driving and some idiot behind me was in such a hurry that he passed me and almost hit another car head on coming from the other side. That could have been really bad because there was a whole family in that other car.

My friend who died this May in Lauterbrunnen had completed 467 successful wing suit flights all over the world over the past 7 yrs and suffered a freak passing out during a flight which resulted in him not being able to activate his shute.

He knew the risks & he loved & lived for what he did & he was about as far from an 'idiot' as it's possible to be. He was also a lovely man & we all miss him terribly.

That's what I can say. You?

So it is not a matter of if, but when! Sorry to hear about your friend though, however I also regard the idiots that ride a motorbike at warp 4 and then seem totally surprised that they get turned into pesto on the radiator of a truck as idiots.
You can drown in a bathtub and life is a sure road to death but do you have to force the issue?
But back to speed flying. SUVA has classed the "sport" as a extreme risk and will cut payouts incase of accident.

That's the thing about the internet, isn't it? - the way that people continue to make a dick of themselves long after they would have handed back the shovel & quietly walked away IRL.

Hey-ho.

Oh, and it's not "Period", it's "in my opinion"
