I just received a notice from my foreign ministry advising that westerners should stay away from the area around Helvetiaplatz Saturday afternoon because the demonstration may turn violent. Given the work being done on the tram tracks on the Kirchenfeldbrucke perhaps the demonstrators will be kept away from downtown.
To put it simply and directly. The Foreign Ministry of Canada apparently has no idea about realities in Switzerland.

You're so delusional, it's actually funny.
Apparently you need mental help.

Delusional ? Hardly, but quite many people take that "Zentralrat" far too seriously. This however apparently includes
- the Canadian Foreign Ministry
- TV DRS
- some newspaper journalists
just to name three.

Whenever I by chance meet a demo, I try to find discussion partners. I some years ago at a tram-station met some Tibetans enroute to a demo and discussed their matter with two of them. It was really very interesting.

Another aspect is that to compare the Muslims in Switzerland with the more than 15 million Muslims in France is rather strange. And by this I speak about the mainstream. And of course, if out of 20'000 people 0,1% gets violent we speak about 200 people ! A bit of a difference.

Strange is the comparison with the Netherlands. The Dutch NEVER were more tolerant than the Swiss. And the Dutch can be rather rough people when feeling to be under whatever kind of attack. I sometimes hear "THE Netherlands are sooooo liberal" etc. I knew/know many Dutch people here personally and the man who first of all trained me in regard to airfreight back in 1973 was a Dutch. THE Dutch tend to be the best transportation specialists on this planet, but diplomacy definitely is NOT their forte

Have you ever lived in Britain? Look out for those Brits all singing "I'm rioting in the rain..."!
I am british, and most riots are when it's sunny. Look at last August, strangely it was warm, riots, people were worried about them continueing, but it rained.

Of course, riots can not be limited to 3 days a year so we do riot in the rain ometimes, but in countries where sun is not a terrifyingly bizar sight, riots in the rain are rarer.

my spell check is not working and I'm dyslexic.

Am wondering what all the fuss is about. I had a terrible time driving from the Salem Spital back to Köniz late afternoon, but not because of any demos or riots, just that the traffic was being re-routed all over the place because two bridges were closed due to construction. Total chaos, pelting rain, but no honking or cursing, just wet policemen and Securitas guys doing their jobs as best they could. Life goes on....

Democracy sucks sometimes. I'm sure all of the religious protestors in Bern really have their fingers on the pulse of reactionary opposition. Armchair sympathy to something that has squat to do with Switzerland, our people or our stance on foreign policy. Might as well go burn a flag in front of Tchibo to protest about slash and burn agriculture in South America which benefits the coffee bean harvest.

I'm running the Greifenseelauf Saturday in the memory of my Grandfather, a fallen soldier. He fell out of the shower during boot camp in Petawawa, Canada but only grazed his knee. I'm sure he'd understand my sentiment and thoughtfulness.
This is why we istalled this for our "AIR BORNE"in Petawawa. If the CFL wants them to I will whatch curling

Thank you Sbrinz!

I am definitely not spoiling my weekend with others' problems.
I work too hard 5 days per week to care about the Quran or Prophet or movies about them.
I hope that Swiss police handles this well but with no compromise.

I am going to either Basel or Luzern, which one would you recommend?
Basel itself is a riot,as a "zuercher" I should know

Re: 2 Demonstrations in Bern on Saturday at 2pm on 22.09

Now hear this all you "'Nay sayers" do you remember the riot in Bern about 5 years ago?

About 5 years ago the SVP were holding a rally on the Bundesplatz in Berne (Parliament Square) and several stands were being set up all ready for the expected mass of people. Small vans were still delivering the give away items.

The Berne police were massed around the square waiting for any trouble makers. Then the police received an anonymous tip off that there was a demonstration at the Allegro Hotel / Casino which is across the river. All the police except one poor chap raced over the river.

The left winger demonstrators then came out of hiding and trashed the SVP vans and stands at the Bundesplatz. The police returned and the mob disapeared into the shopping area and a cat & mouse game began, with demonstrators changing their jackets to fool their persuers. Eventually about 8 demonstrators were caught and charged.

Ummm you lot have short memories!

On 29.03.2003 at the time of President Bush and the G8 conference in Evian there were in Bern several shop windows kicked in... In Geneva a friend of mine was shot in the face, between her right ear and eye, by a policeman using an unofficial paint ball gun from 5 to 6 meters distance. This news item never apeared in the Swiss German press! My friend is now leading the Society of Banking Employees, so some of you may recognise Denise Chervet. This report and a photo of Denise is about half way down this web page http://www.ssi-media.com/pigbrother/Report2003.htm

So please don't think it is always nice and quiet at demonstrations....

Not at all. I know that you only wanted to prevent anyone from getting hurt and based that on previous observation. I seriously appreciate that (regardless my sarcastic undertone from before).

However, if you live in Switzerland long enough, you're getting a sense of what event will most likely turn into violent clashes. In short, you need either some serious football or ice hockey rivalry, some kind of left autonomist hipness, or some bored underage suburban 'gangstas' who use the heat of the moment. But none of this components applied to the two rallies of yesterday. The most unsafe place to be was probably in Zurich around Letzigrund before and after the match between FCZ and GC.
