| | Re: Clothes shopping thread (Zurich and area) | Quote: | | | | | Hello - a call for help on behalf of my fiancée :
Where can she find a beautiful evening dress, elegant, not-over-the-top expensive. The ones she found start at CHF 800 and are suitable for an Opera ball...which would be a bit too much .
For example the dresses on this online store in the UK : Coast's online store (nice dresses for around GBP 150 / CHF 300) ... not available in Switzerland/Zurich.
She tried ordering dresses online from Jelmoli, yet these have never been delivered.
FYI - She also already had a look in Esprit, Modissa, Jelmoli, Globus, and Schild ... without any luck. We even went to a special shop in Baden/Wettingen (Milojka) but found only over-the-top dresses.
Any tips and responses are much appreciated !
I have also been looking for a nice dress in Zurich. I noticed some nice ones (about 150-300CHF) in a store at Sihlcity. I don't remember the name of it, when you get off of the 13 tram and walk towards the shopping area it's one of the first stores on the right (on the corner). Perhaps somebody knows the name? On the second floor they have a small, but nice collection.

hi Vince, I had the same exact problem as your fiance when I was supposed to go to a fancy work do in London. All the stuff I looked at here was too formal, too slutty or way too expensive. The dresses on that link are fantastic, btw. Although I've never had the occassion to buy anything there, I'd recommend the Karen Millen store another poster mentioned earlier up on Storchengasse. | Quote: | | | | | Hello - a call for help on behalf of my fiancée :

Thanks Bartholomew and abzurich for your quick responses .
They provided comfort to my fiancée that apparantly she's not the only one finding it difficult to find a nice dress in Zurich. She's already excited to go to the Karen Millen shop some time after work.
Indeed, going to Germany might be an idea, Zurich is only about 30km from the German border. Perhaps it's worth to drive to Waldshut, Tiengen, Singen - or any bigger town? Greet. Vince

My wife had a look at pretty fancy stuff from Globus and if you are lucky, you can get it very cheap as well: Globus has an "outlet" in Dietlikon in the building of the Media Markt just across the street from IKEA. There they usually have a lot of rather fancy clothes and really sell them out:
My wife bought yesterday pieces that were reduces heavily TWICE, so if the regular price is several hundreds, the reduced price is about half. They had a sale which gave you 70% off the reduced price! So tops that originally cost 200 were first reduced to 70 and in the end cost us 21 CHF! They had some evening dresses as well but it is a matter of luck if you find something you like and if it is available in the size you need... as I said this "70% off" sale was on yesterday but I do not know for how long... and if you do not find anything there, try the two outlet shops from Schild and "Company" next door...

Is there any news (since 2006) on the availability of Gap in or around Switzerland?
Wikipedia tells me that they have branches in France, but their own website is as much use as a soluble wetsuit, with only the United States being covered by their 'store locator'. Is there still a concession in Jelmoli, as suggested earlier? If not, is there a gap in Mulhouse or somewhere else that isn't a million miles away?
They're the only people who make plain black hardwearing t-shirts that actually fit me and my rotund belly and make me look half-way normal... |

So I'm not just scrounging: My personal shopping tip is Entre Deux, in Theaterstrasse, off Bellevue. It's an outlet shop run by a very attentive chap, with an awful lot of very nice shirts that don't fit me, but proper sales assistants that can actually advise on the labels that are likely to look good on a portly gentleman of an ageing disposition. In at least four languages (actually more, but I doubt any of you really need sartorial advice in Aramaic. Apologies to any Syrian Orthodox types who might be browsing the forum).
I picked up a rather lovely black Italian shirt, with doggy cufflinks to go with it (both famous labels, apparently, the names of which escape me because I can't seem to remember stuff like that. The shirt is something '...ino', I think, and the cufflinks are apparently famous for having dogs on them. Or something), for only 200 chf (the cufflinks costing the same as the shirt. Weird, that), and it fits me beautifully!
You even get a glass of grape pop while you're wasting the assistants' time, which is nice, too. |

I'm afraid you're going to have to find another excuse for a Belgian getaway, my friend . No Gap there either to my knowledge. | Quote: | | | | (There wouldn't happen to be one in Brussels, would there?)

Hi Vince,
Try C&A, they have a gown section. I was in a C&A recently and they have beautiful evening dresses and gowns, well tailored...ranging from CHF 150-250.
I would pick one up in a heart beat if I had an event to go to. Aaaaaa...those beautiful dresses... http://www.cunda.ch/ |

In hate to revive the dead, but my 6+ year old daughter needs a very fancy dress for an even in early October. Anyone know of any shops that cater to kids? And of course, wouldn't make me take money from her college fund. thanks!!!!!

Other than that, perhaps Zara, but a bit hit or miss. I personally like DPAM, a french kids clothing line, but not sure if they would have something very fancy, and they have prices to match. DPAM and some others have on-line shops, so maybe check there as well if visiting in person is not necessary, also www.Vertbaudet.ch.

Does anyone have knowledge of a place to find a quality top hat, and/or bowler, (i.e. derby), in the greater Zurich area?

There's a useful outlet of the Grieder-Bon Genie (Josefstrasse, near Zurich main station). You won't beleive me, but I've managed to find a gourgeous evening dress for CHF20 there. The shop is normally expensive, but watch for sales, great things can be found.
