Bicycle stolen or taken away by the police?

Hey people,

Well, today in the morning I went to where I had parked my bicycle about a week ago (just a house away from where I live) and found nothing in its place. Which seems like a typical bicycle theft, but I can't help thinking there might be more to it.

Let me explain: I live in a street with little pedestrian traffic. Moreover, the bicycle was parked in a kind of hidden backyard at the end of an alley, and not in the street itself. It was locked to a column, with three other bikes in the area (which are still there). This being Switzerland, I wouldn't be surprised at all if the bike was not stolen, but rather that someone in that building called the police to report a "bicycle being parked in private property" (despite not interfering in any way) and that the police came and took it away.

Yes, yes, I know I should have not parked it there in the first place. But honestly, I would be much less annoyed by an actual theft than by this over the top Big Brother nonsense.

So, which scenario do you vote for? Theft or uptight neighbors? Any suggestions on what I should do next?

Was the bike of a similar quality to the other two that were still there?

Why did you leave it a house away from where you live for a week? Why not just put it in your house?

I have no idea if the police do this sort of thing, but it would not surprise me.

If it was my back yard, I would cut the chain and move the bike to the railway station.

Well, it was a bit better. But not that much, and they were all mountain bikes.

I put it there because I got home very late and I was lazy to put it in the basement (where the bike storage room is). And then it's been raining pretty much everyday, so I kind of forgot about it. Until today.

Needless to say, I now regret my late-night laziness

Yeah, that's the kind of stuff that's unthinkable anywhere else, but is very much in character here in Switzerland.

Re: Bicycle stolen or taken away by the police?

I'm sorry to say this but I'm pretty sure your bike was stolen. That happened to me just while ago. It was a full-suspension mountain bike parked and locked properly.

A lot of bikes get stolen here. I hope you've got an insurance.

cheers,

Mikko

Why don't you just ask the police?

Re: Bicycle stolen or taken away by the police?

Eihter way, your first step is to report it missing at the police station and fill out the forms they provide. You can then put in an insurance claim. The police have a place where recovered bikes are kept ( whether found or confiscated) where you will be able to go to search in case yours is there to be claied.

I hardly think your comments about Switzerland are objective - I have had two bikes stolen since being here, but still see it as comparitively low risk in relation to other countries I have lived in.

Re: Bicycle stolen or taken away by the police?

Its important you know that all locals are against you. The paranoid neighbours theory is much more plausible than theft. Have you considered the fairy theory?

Someone left a mountain bike in the alley behind our complex the other week so after a few days the locals built a bonfire and sacrificed it in a late night ritual to the demons that protect our unit from outsiders. We then filed a police report blaming foreigners for lighting bonfires after 8pm.

Re: Bicycle stolen or taken away by the police?

AFAIK the police puts a warning band in a bicycle 2 or 3 days before they actually take it away. Did your bike have such things in the past days? If the answer is not then it was probably borrowed... forever.
