Re: Anyone in Fribourg??

Hi Nick
Not a golfer myself (had a few accidents on course) but its a great place to grab a beer and the views are fantastic. I'd gladly meet up for a beer and it's only 2 mins walk from my appartment so if we bore the socks off each other I can crawl home )

Re: Anyone in Fribourg??

Hi I just got to Fribourg less than a week ago for a three month stay (masters project) and then realised my shocking lack of French speaking ability was.....well shocking! and its all been a bit of a massive culture shock! Anyways, is good to see there's somemore people like me around here. So if anyone is up for beers or sports (I even play a bit of Ultimate) let me know.

Cheers

Ben

Re: Anyone in Fribourg??

Have not logged in for a year (moved to Fribourg from Bern back in November and have not looked up since). I was once a solid ultimate frisbee player in Canada (and abroad) and was happy to hear of a league in Fribourg. I would love to get more information and the beer to follow of course.

Hello, fraid I've moved back to England now so no Swiss ultimate for me. Bizarrely enough the English summer isn't just a complete cloud fest this year!

Hi Nick and Dave

My husband and I may be moving to Fribourg. Just a couple of quicky questions - what is it like?? And is it easy to rent a single house as we have 3 bouncy boxer dogs??

What areas do you recommend we look at to live?? And by your thread is it that difficult to make friends?

Cheers from ozzie and english
Hi Ozzie, hi English,

My husband and I have moved to Fribourg (Canton) less than a year ago. Be prepared for great landscapes, nice weather, good food, and friendly people. My husband speaks German but not the Swiss variation of it, but I speak neither German or French (yet). Despite of that we have found people to be very patience and helpful. You might want to check the web site www.homegate.ch to look for houses (it has an English version). Regarding making friends, you might find it easier in Switzerland than in other European countries (specially in the French part)
Good luck,
Thelma

Re: Gyms And French Lessons

Hello!

Well, I've been living in the canton of Fribourg for a few years and I also agree with most of the comments I've seen on this site. It's really not a bad place to live! In my opinion, there's everything that you need, except for a decent swimming pool!! :-)

Of course, if you come from London or a big city, you'll get bored stiff but that's life! As for night life, I really recommend Paddy's pub in town. It's an English speaking community in Fribourg, don't order a drink in French, they won't understand you!! :-)

Anyway, thought I'd answer your question about gyms as I've been to a few here. I used to regularly go to Energym behind Cartier in Villars-sur-Glane. The prices were correct and they offered a good variety of classes but I used to find that the people who went to that gym tended to show off too much. They were all pretty fit and I felt that everyone was looking at you! So when I turned up in old joggers and T-shirt, I felt out of place. I don't like that atmosphere in a gym. The machines were also too close together as it's small and they tried to cram in as many as possible! I haven't been there for a few years so it might have changed...

Another gym is Fit Plus in the Cormanon Centre also in Villars-sur-Glane. This one is very expensive!! It is very modern and so their strategy is to offer an "upper class" service, which I personally feel is wasted in Fribourg. However, they do have all the latest equipment and helpful staff.

There's another one on rte du jura in FR called Training Centre. I've never been so don't know what it's like! And one in Givisiez under Marché Biollet. It's small and old...

I'm now going to a gym called B-Fit on avenue du midi. They don't have any classes, it's simple and basic. But not too expensive and with good equipment.

So there you go, a bit of choice! Good luck!

Hello!

I'm not sure when the post was written, but if there is an English-speaking "club" out there, let me know, I'd be interested in coming along once!

when i popped onto the site http://www.expats-fribourg.ch/ it seemed that they don't hve coffee mornings or weekly meetings - is this so - or have i not found the right page yet?? Bern seems to have lots of things - is this correct?
Cheers Kerri
True, the page is an effort to encourage people, made by the city (tourist agency, economic development agency). I don't think it has an organiser for social events.

To bring everyone together and enable easy organisation of activities, I have just built http://www.meetup.com/meetupfribourg/ . I am looking for several local organisers who can then post information and activities.

As organiser of http://www.meetup.com/meetupberne I am able to own three groups for the same price. So far most has been posted on http://groups.yahoo.com/group/swisscc/ but really Fribourg needs an own networking site.
