After school activity in Baar/Zug

Dear all,

We'll be moving from the Netherlands to Baar in just 1 week. I received the school schedule (Swiss public school) for our son (5 yo) and I have to admit, it was a bit of a shock. My son is used to go to school in the morning and in the afternoon on Mo/Tue/Thursday. In Baar I believe this is only on Monday or Tuesday.

I was wondering, what nice activities are there in/round Baar/Zug in the afternoon for my son? His current Dutch Kindergarten teacher advised us to look for extra curricular activities otherwise he would get bored. I am well aware of the fact that learning SwissG and German is our and his first priority, however, how can he practise his new language when school closes just after starting in the morning? Or is it my Asian background that I am so worried about (shortage of) school (hours)?

I hope that there are some fun activities so he can learn the language and meet new friends.

Thanking you all in advance,

regards,

Yoos

Re: After school activity in Baar/Zug

In Baar the schedule for 1st year kindergarten is 4 mornings and Tuesday afternoon. For 2nd year Kindergarten it is 5 mornings and Monday afternoon. There is plenty to do with him in the afternoons. There are lots of playgrounds and parks in the Baar/Zug/Cham areas. The swimming pools at Baar Lattich are very good. They also have swimming lessons in small groups if you want to put him in a class www.schwimmschule-baar.ch There is also a Kung Fu school, but I'm not sure of their class schedule. The Kids Meeting Point www.kidsmeetingpoint.ch in Baar is also a place to play, I think you can either drop your son off or stay while he plays. Extra german lessons are available at www.sprachinsel.ch which is in Baar. My daughter has only just started this, but i know that it is divided into groups by age. The library is nice and there is also a toy library(ludotheek) http://ludothek.baar.ch/de/ (as well as the book library) where you can borrow a large range of toys, puzzles, games, videogames, outside toys, craft toys.... starting at 1chf for a month (or 30chf for 6 months worth of borrow as much as you want). A lot of the children in the Kindergarten (and also school) use the time just to play with each other, which is what the teachers recommend as the best way to pick up the swiss-german. You can also use the time to go a little further afield. The train from Baar to Zurich is about 25 minutes. The Zoo is great, last week me and my First Grader caught the 12.38 train from Baar to Zurich, changed to a tram to the Zoo, and were there in about an hour. Its quicker to drive in i think, but the journey is part of the day out for my daughter! We stayed at the zoo all afternoon and it's plenty of time there. There are plenty of things to see with reasonably short journey time. I'm sure there is plenty more stuff but we have only been in Baar one year, so are still finding things out!
I think the Kindergarten's here are very good, definitely comparable with the Netherlands in my opinion. They mostly learn through play and also do school trips and outdoor activities. My daughter loved it at Kindergarten, and now loves the First Grade at school. They get very independent very quickly!
Good Luck with the move, Baar is a great place to live.

Re: After school activity in Baar/Zug

Dear Rachael,

Many thanks for your message and links. The pool is great, we've visited Baar in July, also to introduce ourselves to the Hauseigentümerin of our apartment. Our kids (5 yo and 3 yo) loved the Freibad.

It sounds like you're well integrated and adapted to Swiss life in Baar. Do you know where I can take some German lessons? I've just finished a course in Amsterdam (Goethe Institut) but it's at a very moderate level (B1). With a more comprehensive knowledge of hochdeutsch, I am convinced that there are more job possibilities for me.

Thank you and regards,

Yoos

Re: After school activity in Baar/Zug

I haven't had proper German lessons - I've tried to learn from the internet and books (although I'm not doing that well!)
Language courses of all levels are available through the Migros Klubschule www.klubschule.ch in Zug. One of my friends has done Italian courses through them and has been happy with it. The www.sprachinsel.ch also does courses for adults but i'm not sure of the level. There is also a language school in Baar www.softlanding.ch which i have heard of through the International School newsletter although I don't know much about it. Castles Institute also has a place in Zug www.castles.ch and teaches language courses. I'm sure there are many more available too.

Couple of other kid things that i remembered, www.intersoccer.ch run some after school courses, weeekend courses and also holiday courses if your kids like soccer. Dance lessons, www.bodymove.ch and if your eldest is in the 2nd year of Kindergarten, there is a scout group, www.pfadibaar.ch where the kids go about once a month on a Saturday and do activities. My daughter just did the trial day and wants to join it as she said it was so much fun!
