i've seen people here leave their iphones on an unattended table at the bar while they went out to smoke
I'll take the bait on this one Phil.

Clearly more addicted to their nicotine fix than human life or their small piece of Cupertino, CA designed bundle of electronics. That's just so sad.

I agree. Don`t go out to bars with all your documents in a handbag! If you do, then keep it clutched under your arm.

Going out, I stuff what I really need (money/basic ID) into a pocket. Handbag is just to carry junk around in - handcream, lipstick, pen, diary, portable ashtray, lighter, pet snake, bag of peanuts, etc.

If I`m needing my phone, it goes into a zipped pocket on jacket.

Speaking of jackets....... one winter night, at a bar, where everyone hangs their jackets in an alcove........on leaving, one lady discovered her jacket was missing. A serious theft, as it was minus 10c outside, and she had to walk home! So since then I sit on my jacket.
Ive also been a group, late night, terribly drunk, minus celcius, and gone to the coat rack to find a coat that looked like mine, but was about a woman's size 6.

Luckily the culprit was in our group and we tracked her down next day and swapped back. Also lucky we were hammered and 3 blocks from homes I didn't feel the cold.

In London bag snatching is well known and my wife knows and is careful. Here I see her leave it everywhere without a care in the world, its only a matter of time.

Switzerland has less crime but their is still crime. Just makes sense to keep your things close and under watch.

Well, many things can be done.

- more cctv cameras. Announcements, leaflets, signs posted in public places, plain police in the city centre and banning the repeat offenders coming back into the country or even sending them back!
The problem i see is CH is in denail and security services and shop bar managers thinking this is acceptable.
The bar manager that my bag got stolen said on avarege 30 a week only in that bar stealing happens yet there were no cameras or warning signs anywhere.
Amazing that couple of people had groaned at me for above suggestions )

To what, exactly? Kick out all the foreigners?

Tom
Why would anyone want innocent honest working foreigners to be kicked out. I m a foreigner. However if i was a thief and kept offending. I woldnt be shocked if i was to be deported.

Your comment says alot. First you assume the thieves are from outside the country. How do you know that. Do you think there are no Swiss thieves? And I say to hell with more cameras!!If you are going to carry around expensive items then live with the fact of getting it stolen some day. Look after your own shit!!

Re: Watch out your handbags in Zurich

it's true that they could do something about D-Vino, I was there with a friend one evening sitting on the high chairs near the entrance. She had her bag next to her feet and it was gone after 20 minutes.
The manager looked sorry but not surprised, neither did the police...

it's great to be politically correct and spread the guilt to all evenly, but we all know the the truth: thieves around the HB are mostly non swiss.

My wife has 'lost' her designer bag, three separate times, in Zurich. All three times, it has come back, with everything included and intact, even the cash. After the 2nd time she lost it, I told she had no right to complain if she ever lost it again. Anyway, my impression is that people here are, for the most part, extremely honest.

Re: Watch out your handbags in Zurich

Hi all,

Sad to say however my partner had her wallet stolen on a tram today.

All in all, it had cards and some small cash in it. They worked on the cards and took a nice sum..

We think it was near Bellevue so be aware and hopefully we can all avoid this happening in the future..

Cheers,
mimes

How did they use the cards - fake signature? Hopefully the bank will refund you very quickly.

Most of the petty crime around here is not down to the Swiss I can assure you. You would think the obvious thing to do in this case is send them back. I know that if I was convicted of an offense here I would not expect he Swiss to put up with me.

As for CCTVs, I am all for them. We recently had a tragic case in Melbourne in which the alleged perpetrator was caught on CCTV. Without CCTV it is likely the lunatic would still be roaming the streets.

I guess that's what the thieves are hoping everyone believes as well
I think the point, which you missed, is that CH is no worse than many places in Europe, and certainly better than a lot of other places.

As ever "common sense" rules apply when watching your property in public places...

Re: Watch out your handbags in Zurich

Waw...so many people in the same situation. I come from a country where thieves are ...well... ALMOST everywhere and you never know when you will be the next victim ( once I was going out of the Undeground and I felt my knapsack opening and I've seen a guy going trough my small packet in my knapsack and we looked at each other in shock and he gave me my thing back...it was just a small disinfecting lotion...since then I am more careful with my things).
I was always careful with my things because I was hearing all kinds of stories and I was thinking that in that small pocket I can put things that are cheap like handkerchiefs but yeah, a stolen thing is a stolen thing.
When I arrived in Switzerland I felt safe in so many ways. Then I was reading the newspapers and I thought: Well, Switzerland is not so safe after all BUT I feel safer than in my country.
Few months ago, on a rainy day, I was in a Manor in a small village and I put my umbrella in the place designed for the umbrellas and when I wanted to get it back , it was gone. I was shocked that someone would steal my umbrella...really, what the heck?
Anyway, reading all these stories, makes me even more paranoid now...
As long as you take care of your things, thieves don't have a chance.

Ha yes, it was black and it was the ONLY black umbrella. I remember it was one blue with yellow stripes and one red with the white cross.
Hm...how do you know it was black? :P

So we're looking for a Swedish or Swiss thief... but he can't have been Swiss because all thieves are foreign... so he must have been Swedish!

Filthy, thieving, raping and pillaging viking bastards!
