Unusual also is that MeteoSwiss who is in the habit to declare everything as usual and NOT unusual now for a change admits that it is extraordinary
Yes!! finally thats the answer, thanks awfully
Note that we are mostly talking about lowlands say zurich ,..

My other half has her birthday on October 20th and there has been always snow around this time., Saying that I was mowing the grass in November last year!
This in Thurgau depends heavily on the exactl location
Kreuzlingen 397 meters above sea-level (lakefront)
Frauenfeld 430 meters above sea-level
Fischingen 625 meters above sea-level
so that the difference between Kreuzlingen and Fischingen is 228 meters, which is comparable to the height above sea-level of Basel

Re: When was the last snow in October?

We haven't had any snow here in our neck of the woods at 400 m.a.s.l since we arrived in 1999. The idea of a white Halloween is a bit weird 'though.

Yes, strange. I a week ago had gone swimming the Lake of Zürich on both Saturday and Sunday at water temperature 17degrees centigrade. And this weekend freeze and snow and cold hands
I actually got sunburnt only seven days ago in the Züri Oberland... but that's October for you.

You should improve your German, as the article says BERN, and not SWITZERLAND!

Re: When was the last snow in October?

A number of years ago, think it was maybe 5-8 years ago, there was a heavy snow in the Alps at the end of August. REGA was called in to sling out a dozen cows that got stuck in the white stuff.

While the article says Bern, the headline says Switzerland. Beside the point that Bern is the Federal Capital, elected to this position after the War of 1847/48, and so the political and administrative heart of Switzerland

Kanton Bern

I think Tom is getting to the point of your article claims 1931 in Bern, whereas we have had snow in other parts of Switzerland in October since 2008 and 2009.
JC

PS: Heart of Switzerland? Not in my opinion. We could argue for hours about that

So eventually, it seems that the last similar snow was in 80 years ago. Correct me.

A) Mr Alfred von Escher also strongly disagreed with that election and vowed to make Zürich the REAL Capital and kept word but Bern IS the Federal Capital harbouring the federal administration
B) Bern also had snow in 2008 and 2009 but not as much as now, and the same applies to Zürich, Luzern and Schaffhausen
C) Bern is fairly average climate and weather wise while Zürich due to size and lake has a warmer climate than much of the wider surrounding, Basel is at a low level and Geneva just like Lugano has a relatively midle micro-climate. At the other side you can find places like St. Gallen which tend to have far more snow than average

So, what's your point? Like I said, we could discuss that for hours, but it's not important.

Back to OT.

The report was

And while there WAS snow in October in Schaffhausen and Zürich in the past, I cannot remember anything thelike in either city. Born in 1950 I cannot judge years before 1954 of course.

It also is clear that there was far more snow quite generally in the 1950ies and 60ies than in recent years and even this episode will not change much really

Agree with you there. Compared to the past, the snowfall is noticeably less in recent past.

Looking at christmas in Zurich 1940-1970 there was no snow (<1cm) on any day (24th-26) in

41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49, 51, 52, 53, 55, 57, 59, 60, 65, 66, 67

The years with snow on all 3 days

40, 50, 56, 62, 63, 64 , 69, 70

So I'm not convinced there really was that much more snow in the past.
