Re: When was the last snow in October?

Somebody should start a complaint about it. In fact, I've been thinking about doing it myself: "Why does it always snow in Switzerland in the winter?"

Re: When was the last snow in October?

I have a photo of a 20+ cm snowfall in Ausserschwyz dated October 29 in 2008. I am fairly sure that we've had similar October snows many years.

What is difficult about this time of year is the freeze, thaw, freeze, thaw cycles - so much garden damage. I absolutely love winter so am happy when there is an early snow - but once it's here I just wish it would stick around until spring.

Re: When was the last snow in October?

Very common to have snow in October - but as Meloncollie says, it does not last usually. We had about 20cm yesterday, but it has all drifted due to the very strong east wind (called 'la bise'/die bise').

Re: When was the last snow in October?

From memory, I was kayaking in Switzerland on a snowy October day in 2007. ( though I could be one year out.)

Re: When was the last snow in October?

It basically snows at altitudes of 900 meters up at least once every October. Snow in the lowlands at this time of year is rather unusual.

It's too early for the snow to stick so don't put away your hiking shoes yet.

That's right, we're at roughly 400m and it snows quite heavily. I like it though.

Re: When was the last snow in October?

We are around 450m and had plenty here and from what i recall 2010 we had snow lying in the garden for the entire month of December.

I love it bring it on but please let me get my winter tyres sorted out first.

Also ii want to know who stuffed up the timing on the trees losing their leaves. The rule is the leaves should be gone then the snow arrives, this is very poor planning by the authorities to allow snow to fall before, the leaves are finished, however this should make for some really nice photos later of snow and autumn colours!

Re: When was the last snow in October?

Here in Bern (elevation 543 m) it started snowing last night and continuing throughout the mid-afternoon today. There's about 25 cm of snow on the ground outside.

November and the first part of December's weather can be anything.

I once went hiking wearing short sleeves on December 11.

Problem with this in NJ last year was that a heavy snow fall accumulated on the trees with the leaves acting as catchers. Brought trees down, onto power lines, fences, etc. Hopefully doesn't cause the same here.

Take a look around powerlines here are underground heaps smarter way to operate, but agree that was part of my point that the snow is a bit early for the trees

Yes much smarter. In NY/ NJ you lose power for early snow, took much rain, too hot.
