What is this? Found in my basement.

Went down to the basement to feed the cat and found this. No idea how it got in there; assume via a drain somehow?
Anybody able to identify it before it is lightly sauteed?

Poor thing gonna freeze outside. Do they hibernate? Can it spend the winter in your basement without your cat eating it?

Yep, looks like a toad - I was clearing some leaves last week and one of them jumped right out at me - nearly finished me off with the shock

Yeah, we were going more Mr Toad from Toad Hall than Kermit the Frog. We have the cane toads up north in Oz and am wondering if is it usual for them to appear in ones basement?
Native or introduced?

If they freeze, then how do they survive here. Are they reliant on finding a squat (no pun intended)?
Anyway, I thought I was doing a good deed by putting him outside. If he comes back I will try to lodge him but I don't think the wife, tin-lid and cat are going to be massive fans.

Is this toad EU or non EU? Does it have a permit and have you declared it to customs?

There are native toads in Switzerland, but they aren't very interesting.

The toad you have here, though, has obviously crept over the border from France. It's a 'crapaud fou', favourite of French hippies for its psychedelic properties when licked.

Please come back and tell us how you got on.

Many hibernating animals, like hedgehogs for instance, have to find 'squats' to spend winter (nice little dome of dry leaves is perfect) and many indeed freeze in our over cleaned gardens.

Re: What is this? Found in my basement.

Found a dead frog years ago in the laundry in November. Unfortunately I must have stepped on it unaware of it's existance. I am usualy out early in the morning for walks and have seen it all with the exception of wild pigs.

In Sydney we have flaps on the bottom of the doors to stop the wild life getting in. In Sydney I have seen....Scorpions, Centrepedes, Brown snakes, Red back spiders, funnel web spiders and lots of other spiders...come in. Even now after being in Switzerland for several years I still have part of my attention on the open door way during the summer months.

Enjoy and have a good night sleep tonight...

Soft. Redback nothing to fear, just squash them with ya thumb.

Now, these bad boys are prevalent in Canberra. They love getting into your car and attaching themselves to the visor. Nice one for the ladies when they go to check the lippy.

Re: What is this? Found in my basement.

Do you have a garden? if so find an old plant/flower pot and turn it upside down, with a piece of wood on one side to allow for escape- in a corner of your plot. Put toad under, then cover with some fallen leaves, covered with a few twigs and more fallen leaves- so it has a nice insulated dome to over-winter. I have made such cosy houses in 4 areas of the garden, within reach of the pond- for hedgehogs, newts, frogs and toads. They are very grateful ... I think

Or do as the Brits do 'Toad in the Hole' a favourite delicacy
