I have watched Asians get off a bus, half file into a jewelery shop, the other half go take pictures. Those that went into the shop and paid cash, come out with high-end watches and a smile on their face.

Even Asians will not come out of the shop with a Rolex

Ok. Maybe if they are Asian american

But seriously, I like Americans. I just don't understand why they think of Rolex first when they want a nice watch. I have never seen a Rolex anywhere except in the US

Never seen anyone but Americans buying Rolex watches. In pink gold, with diamonds? Seriously? Where is the fashion police?
I like it. I'd prefer it without the steel and with a brown alligator strap but the face/dial is gorgeous.

Bad place to get a watch. Well, on the plus side you can get anything - steel Daytonas, whatever you want. On the negative, it's one of the most expensive pre-tax places to shop. If you're claiming the tax back anyway, go to Germany.

Re: Do you know of any Good Rolex discounts

Rolex and Patek are infamous with the complete absence of discounts. At times, authorized dealers who are nailed to the wall with sales targets each quarter "leak" few pieces via trusted channels. In 9 out of 10 cases, these trusted channels run through online fora rather than online shops.

From the top of my head, I would say go to http://www.rolexforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=9 and take a look around. Few people are regular and have stellar reputation. You can PM with select few, as the model you seek is neither scarce, nor common - you can request a quote. Next best thing would be to have a US address to ship to, as this is covered by insurance whereas international shipments seldom are covered completely. Then, you need a good friend to bring it along on their next trip, or scout for 100% insured high-value parcel although costs often defeat the purpose of the exercise altogether.

Depending on how good your networking skills are, you can also venture to make acquaintance with a Rolex employee: they are all allowed to buy one Rollie per year at 40% off. On paper they are not allowed to sell them but the practice of giving it to a "cousin" as a "gift" is now the rule.

There are always the auction houses, the pre-owned market and the Singapore/Hong Kong shops where cash is king, but all depends on your timeline and guts to explore. One thing is certain - no Swiss retailer will ever offer you discount outside the 8% VAT should you chose to "export" it. Not on a Rolex anyway.

Rolex is the only company in the world to certify *ALL* watches produced with COSC, meaning they are by default chronometer grade timing instruments. Any deviation outside the -4/+6 sec/day tolerances is clear indication of either long overdue maintenance or Fauxlex on your wrist. Quoting minutes lost/gained per day is absurd. Unless, of course, you live in the tunnels of the Large Hardon Collider in CERN and wear a model other than Milgauss.

Good luck, the watch is beautiful in the metal!

....I justg happen to know the Rolex importer in Dubai, he tells me it's cheaper to buy in Switzerland than in Dubai. Fact.

The watch in questrion was quoted yesterday in Madrid at Euro 9800.-- WITHOUT diamaonds, but steel/gold case, including 21% VAT.

Rolex do not condone discounts if their agents get caught giving discounts the agency is removed. This is similar for most top brands, and trhe all check by sending shoppers around the globe.

Anything about 10% on any of the major brands is good especilly for new or easy to sell models, such as a GMT or a Submariner. Out dated or difficult models, more discount is posible but not so much as you seem to indicate.

Prices are pretty much similar over the world, you can achieve a good discount by using the exchange rate when it works in your favour (like when Euro was close to parity with Chf) and by claiming back VAT. The exchange rate oppoertunities do not last for very long, you nmeed to be quick and mobile.

Clocks&Clouds has become a little unpopular
Re: Do you know of any Good Rolex discounts

I was comparing prices in shop windows for Swiss watches in London and Hong Kong, thinking maybe the latter would be cheaper as no VAT (versus 20% in UK).

In my small sample of comparison (a couple of Omega and Rolex models) the prices were almost exactly the same.

So I wonder if the best policy is to buy a watch in a high VAT area, then claim back tax on your way out.

And you'll get more of a hammering if you keep distributing groans so liberally. Step away for a few hours if it gets heated. It's just the interwebz, and this is just a chat about watches -- it's not politics, paedophilia or the disenfranchisement of the indigenous peoples of the northern reaches of Canada!

That's the general rule for all high-end purchases -- there was a thread on this a way back. Scandinavian countries are often a good bet for this.

And because we're all good law-abiding Swiss residents, we pay only 8% VAT on our imported bargains -- so the saving on the ticket price of an item purchased in Germany (for example), even with no haggling, is around 7%. If that ticket price is the same as, or less than, the price in Switzerland, that 7% goes back into your pocket.

I'll say that for this American, it was ignorance. Rolex in the US has positioned itself as THE luxury watch brand, and not many Americans are aware how many luxury watchmakers there actually are. My dad wants a Rolex himself, a Daytona, and I've tried pointing out numerous nicer watches to him, but he's set in his ways.

For me however, I'll take an Urwerk- they're eye-catching and unique without being jewel-encrusted blingy. Or, for a more classic look, I love the Breguet skeleton tourbillon, in either yellow gold or white.

As loathe as I am to agree with you, you are correct.

I had a beer with someone who works at Rolex in Geneva. His words "bling-bling".

My preference is for an IWC.

My wife is guiding Chinese business folks visiting Swiss companies in Switzerland and Rolex is still one of the main watches they buy. It's all about the so called brand recognition and status over there and Rolex is a well known brand for luxury in most part of China
