Large square structure in the Jura hills

This has been bugging me for years now. There is a large, squareish structure high up in the Jura hills, which is easily visible from the Fribourg region, meaning it must be bloody enormous. It's more or less at the highest point of the Jura (where there is currently snow) and is south of Neuchatel. Does anyone have any idea what it is?

Re: Large square structure in the Jura hills

It could well be, it's bloody big enough, but the thing I'm thinking off really stands out, this looks to be more at a level with the terrain behind.

It's a bit tough right now, considering I'm sat in my office and can't even see the Jura .

orlowski has made some interesting contributions
Re: Large square structure in the Jura hills

What your seeing is probably a very large telecommunications tower, several stories high, set on top of the Chasseral:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chasseral
http://wanderland.myswitzerland.com/....cfm?id=318304

You can easily see this from a good distance away.
You can drive up to the tower from Le Landeron for a wonderful view of the Alps.

Bingo! That's it! It's much further north than I thought, but it's definitely the structure I'm referring to.

Yep, that's what I was going to suggest - easily visible from Fribourg and beyond.

On the subject, a bit further west from Chasseral - approx north of Neuch., almost at the top of the ridge (in trees) - I can see a line of about half-a-dozen orange lights, with one brighter than the others, and flashing (revolving, like a lighthouse). Obviously when dark.

Always curious as to what that is - my best guess is the observation type tower at the end of a suspended walkway - never been and don't know the name, but remember seeing a pic. once.

Re: Large square structure in the Jura hills

Looking at it from my window at this very moment.

It took us absolutely ages to work out exactly what it was when we first moved here and google maps proved to be absolutely useless.

It is actually quite a bit north of Neuchâtel.

That's probably the observation platform at Chaumont.

That's what I was thinking of - but does it flash, like an orange lighthouse, in the dark?

Re: Large square structure in the Jura hills

You got me all confused with your 'south of the Jura'

Our nearest member to this structure is our Big Mara, and then of course BelgianMum.

I do prefer the Creux-du-VAn though, just down the road from me and one of my favourite places in the world. Those from Yorkshire may well have 'seen it before' at 'Malham Cove' - although you don't get such a beautiful view of the alps and the lake from Yorkshire

It was a wild guess with no reference points to go by.

Could be worth a bike trip up there one day.
