Tassimo Machine giveaway - Zurich Station 2pm today

For those of you in Zurich.....

Take an old kitchen appliance to Zurich station and swap it for a free Tassimo machine!

I have one at home, and they aren't bad at all - they do a good Chai Latte for those of you following that thread!

Hope this make someone

Easy for you to take the moral high ground. You only paid a piece of wire for your coffee maker. (You gonna swap it for a sparkly new Tassimo?)

Re: Tassimo Machine giveaway - Zurich Station 2pm today

So I can literally take any kitchen appliance?

I'm thinking stop in Inter Discount, buy the cheapest ****iest thing I can find, then go swap it. Alternatively, I have a microwave where the dial button no longer works that I would be glad to get off my hands.

And there's the rub: my piece of wire was put to good use, Adrian didn't have to throw a coffee machine away and the machine doesn't use capsules... Aaaaaand for the record, if I hadn't made the swap with Adrian, no, I wouldn't have swapped (even if in Basel) and won't be... so I will stay on my moral high ground, thankyouverymuch...

As an aside, what are the promoters of this swap going to do with all the old hardware they get - bin it? Not exactly very eco-friendly... Even if they do give the stuff away to charity, most people will be handing in things that they would be likely binning and/or getting a cheap item that they can quickly replace - generating more waste on top of the future capsule waste.

Sorry, this seems to have turned into a rant...

Edit 1: Oh look, Richdog just made my point for me...

Edit 2: I don't really have an issue with people taking up this offer, if they are in the market for a coffee machine, why not. I just think the promoters are not being very responsible in their approach and, as I said, it is clear they expect to make the money in future capsule sales, which in itself tells you lots about the whole capsule system.

Re: Tassimo Machine giveaway - Zurich Station 2pm today

Picked up one of these today, the queue in the HB snaked round and round and was firmly and politely managed by some security guys (still didn't stop a few cheeky so-and-sos from trying to push in or do that thing where someone wanders up to a queue with a totally blank expression, like they were sleepwalking, try to merge, and then act all surprised and even slightly miffed when people tell them to feck orff); the atmosphere was rather pleasant, people seemed chuffed with their shiny new toy, the woman behind me on the escalator back down to the trains told me she was looking forward to a nice cup of coffee tomorrow instead of the manky stuff she had been making in her tatty old Italian percolator (her words, not mine).

The items received were being put into bins for recycling where possible, and the dead electrical gadgets were being put into skips for normal safe disposal.

I was able to pick one up as well. They didnt go tooo quickly but it was a really fantastic deal. Even though you can pick one of these up for about 44 CHF new at some locations, it was nice to get it free and get rid of my old water boiler.

Not sad. This is a common marketing strategy that is used to sell many, many every day products. It's called product-line pricing.

...and if it makes a load of people go home with a smile on their faces, that in itself is justification enough!

I know about product-line pricing. What is sad to me is the waste that goes with those machines

So, what you are saying is that the ends justify the means?

Fail.

I meant the marketing strategy is not sad... but if they are just dumping the old machines rather than properly recycling them, then that is indeed very sad and rather irresponsible.

Again, I meant a smile/making a customer's day justifies the marketing strategy. It would not justify any failure to stand up to the company's social responsibilities with respect to recycling. I don't know what they actually intend to do with the old machines.

And why would you just assume they are dumping, as opposed to recycling properly? Surely if they were just dumping they wouldn't have had specific sections for each type of electronics appliance... and surely they know that they conduct business in a country that is strict about the environment and recycling?

Seems pretty silly to in fact assume they were not going to recycle.

I haven't assumed anything either way - I don't know what they are doing at all. The clue was in the "if". Other posts indicate they might be attempting to recycle some of it and I hope that's true.

We live in a consumer-driven society - of which I am a part of, no denying it - where it is better to get the latest gadget and dump the old even if it works fine.

Who is it who said "...buy the cheapest ****iest thing I can find, then go swap it"?

Oh yes, you.

It is not just about recycling, it is about unecessary waste generation. Both at the point of pick up and further down the line with these energy wasting capsules...

I was kidding with the stuff about buying the cheapest thing and then swapping it, they were just semi-humorous examples of what you could do.

Extra recycling from the result of one afternoon of swapping electronics devices is hardly going to break the system, and realistically neither are 100 extra tassimo machines in a world already full of them and their ilk.

As long as they disposed of all the equipment properly then they have done nothing wrong except to self-righteous busybody types.

Don't forget the shipping of the coffee beans halfway across the world. All consumers outside of coffee bean growing locale need to stop drinking coffee. Or only drink coffee from locally grown sources

A joke to you, indeed, but I am willing to get that some will have done this.

Maybe it is just the concept of the machine and their ilk that I dislike. Maybe I just don't like the fact that I'm not George Clooney.

No. But I drink stuff roasted here (in Basel) and usually pick the fairtrade options. A small step and all that. Roasting the beans is one step, but the processing, packaging and sending out of the capsules, that I reckon mostly get chucked in the bin is just wasted energy and resource that IMO could be avoided, but because we all want to be George and are too lazy and need the latest gadget, we have to have...

As I said, I can't blame people for taking up the offer. I don't have to agree with the offer though, do I?

Free choice and all that, right? Chances are we'll see an uptick in Tassimo machines being sold on EF in about a month. I'm surprised I haven't seen one yet... I'm such a freakin' cynic...
