Re: Visit best city in Switzerland in 3D

Interesting about Olten is to look at the old town buildings, which architecture wise reflect influences from Bern and Zürich on one side and a clear influence of Catholic Baroque on the other. Some buildings remind me of similar ones in the Alsace (Mülhausen-Mulhouse, Colmar, Strassburg)

Quite obviously, the city has gone through a heavy renovation in recent years.

Good for Olten is that SBB CARGO moves its HQ from Basel to Olten, which will have two results, A) people will move over to Olten and B) jobs for locals will be created

Re: Visit best city in Switzerland in 3D

Very similar to Solothurn, which is "next door"

Olten has a very poor image, usually in the news due to railways and prostitutes.

Freiburg is a beautiful old town, almost romantic, and with a lot of oldworldliness but a bit oldfashioned. Comparable to places like Estavayer, Murten-Morat, Solothurn. Schaffhausen and Stein-am-Rhein. Olten is a small town beside a very large rail station. Just like Biel-Bienne, Olten has improved over the past 20 years, even if Biel went ahead faster. But Olten is in a unique strategic location and right now in an expansion-phase, which I find surprising.

Look at the rail-connection. Out of Olten you are in Zürich, Luzern, Bern and Basel (and the airports of Zürich, Basel and Bern) within LESS than an hour.

Rather the contrary. Solothurn is a beautiful old and traditional city. Lots of oldworldliness. I some years ago took a sales-rep from Singapore to Solothurn and the chap used up a film on that place. Olten for ages had the reputation to be the busy railways capital at the strategically best location but to be a shabby industrial town.

Railways is what Olten is all about.

Geographically, Solothurn and Olten are divided by a stretch of Bernese territory. The link you see on the map is just theoretical as it is an area of mountains. And Solothurn is the capital of the Canton while Olten is not political but economics

A trip just to Olten alone will not be a good idea, but a trip which includes Olten, Solothurn and Biel will be
