Sensation in the botanical garden Basel

The huge and carrion-smelling flower of Titan Arum last opened on Good Friday evening 2011. Almost two meters high, the Titan Arum has a long yellow piston and a brown-red funnel shaped husk. The flower smells strongly of fish or carrion, Particularly intense is the fragrance, or stench in the first twelve hours after the opening of the flower. Then the funnel remains open for a while before the collar like husk will close and the piston collapses into itself. Native of the Titan Arum in the tropical rain forest in Sumatra.

The flower is expected to open within days...

Re: Sensation in the botanical garden Basel

I went to this last year, queued up at midnight, and had great fun. The botanical gardens at night (when it's usually closed) was a cool experience. The flower itself not so exciting; but the hype and atmosphere made up for it.

However, I thought this stinky thing only opened once every 75 years? Now, correct my maths if you wish, but last year wasn't 75 years ago.

Correct.

The last opening before the one last year was 75 years before. Apparently they have got the conditions so perfect in the garden house that we have a flowering again this year.
