Selecta level selection -- food in mortal danger of being smashed

In the ubiquitous Selecta (and other) vending machines, why are crisps, biscuits, Twix bars and other fragile items always placed on the top level, with the furthest to plummet to the delivery window?

Coz they are more floaty than the drinks which will explode if dropped from that height

As long as my Bifi's make the drop I don't really care.

Twix is supposed to be a bar?

I like my Selecta Twix dust!

Must be a slow day in the mod's booth. On the other hand, I'm sure if you choose Twinkies, they will survive any fall and then some.

I love that Chips uses technical terms like floaty.

In truth, it is because they are smaller and lighter weight - which presumably keeps the machine from flattening you like a pancake when you shake it to get your blasted twix to drop into the hopper.

Yep, I get that, but at my work there are no drinks in cans or bottles in the machine (they have their own groovy drinks machine) and yet, the smashable stuff is still up there, a metre from oblivion.

And in other news, the Tetra-packed chocolate milk (which would survive re-entry to the earth's atmosphere if it had to) is sitting cozily on level 1.

First people complain about shop opening times.

And finally somebody finds a shop that is open 24/7.

And they complain the staff throw things.

There's no pleasing some people.

Re: Selecta level selection -- food in mortal danger of being smashed

i think it is because there are different cooling zones inside the machines.
so i think the crisps/Twix are placed on top because they need to be warmer, then the coke for example.

I'm confident that Twix and co survive the drop - but don't let the coke smash 'em.

Has anyone ever wondered just how many different items they could buy as they shove 15 francs in coins in for the pregnancy test?

Re: Selecta level selection -- food in mortal danger of being smashed

Marketing gurus on exorbitant expat contracts are currently being paid way over 120,000 CHF a year to make decisions about the placement of the items in the Selecta machine.

If they told you why the Twix were on the top row, they'd have to kill you.

Sorry.

One problem, which no one seems to have noticed. The twix is actually on the 4th to top row, isn't it?

In that machine pictured, found on the interweb, maybe -- not so in the machine at my work. But I understand now why my work machine is arranged that way; I went to the Selecta machine this afternoon for a revitalizing Mars bar and found it open, being restocked by a man (I think -- or possibly something/body out of Michael Crichton's Next) who grunted unintelligibly at me as he attempted to calculate the change due to me for the CHF1.50 that I proffered in exchange for the CHF1.40 chocolate bar ...

True; in Zimbabwe I'd still be working out how to stuff $153,000 into the coin slot and by the time I worked it out, I'd need another 387,500 anyway.

Whatever the reason I'm sure that it's perfectly logical. Afterall, the guy who replenishes them required a 4 year apprenticeship.

I guess the high rent eye level is for those impulse buys like condoms, lighters and pregnancy tests.
