What's up with all the German Schlager songs about Italian women?

What's up with all the German Schlager songs about Italian women, particularly "Maria"? If I had a dollar for every Schlager I've heard singing about "Maria", I'd maybe be able to kaufe ein haus in CH in cash...

Maybe someone should set up a match-making business to match German Swiss men with women for Ticino, Graubunden and Lombardy....

My German is far away from being good to understand songs, but often times in Italian songs "Maria" stands for marijuana....

It is a kind of tradition. When the German Schlager started in the 1950ies, the country to where West-Germans and Swiss-Germans and Austrians went for summer-holidays was Italy. Italy so was associated with nice women, nice beaches, good cuisine, nice music, nice evenings, and savoir-vivre in general. Also Italian songs got into "North-of-the-Alps-Europe", as the following ones

-
That kind of music, Italian and Ticinesi wines, and Spaghetti + Salami of course were supported by Italian and Ticinesi immigrants

This was particularily the case in those post-WW-II decades when life in both north-of-the-Alps-Switzerland and West Germany was a bit strict and a bit stubborn. I can still remember the first days of the summer holidays in the late 50ies, when all trains towards the South were full, full with tourists and full with temporary returnees, and in the 60ies when the roads (no highways until Milano) were full even at 3.30 in the morning !

In the 1950ies and early 60ies, pictures like the ones of German Federal President Walter Scheel in this role

only became possible after Willy Brandt had become West-German Federal Chancellor

THIS here, Vico Torriani, a man from St. Moritz /Graubünden, who later lived in Zürich and Lugano, and made most of his money in West-Germany, made a bridge betweeen Ticino-Italy and the "North-Side"

and also prominent in this function was Nella Martinetti

Seems that singers/songwriters from German speaking countries cater to German speaking men's desire for hotblooded, passionate and beautiful women who are able to and willing to cook However, if they find out that they have a tendency to hysteria and are incredible high-maintenance they could change their mind and be happy with their frosty Swiss/German women again

Generally, it's the other way, Ticinese/Italian men with German Swiss women. I know quite a few such couples, three currently in our building alone, as well as the parents of a co-worker and those of a good friend, plus quite a few others in our village.

Have to get down to Ticino and see what it is all about. Was there in 97 for a day or so and it rained the whole time....

Out of curiosity, what would the ratio of southerners (i.e. not true Ticinese but "imports" from the mezzogiorno etc) be down there nowadays?
