Re: Switzerland best country to be born in!

This is interesting! Thanks!

My son was born in Canada (which is number 9) and now lives here. I'd say he's won the lotto!

So being that I'm Aussie and the missus is Swiss, does that mean we should start doing it without the ol Durexes.... ?

Not sure I want to be held responsible for tuning Cheeseville into (real) footy loving, thong wearing, XXXX guzzling, yobbos...

Better off leaving them to their energy drinks, cigarettes and anti-social nose blowing on humid days.....

Re: Switzerland best country to be born in!

Switzerland does have its minor faults (which are complained about on here constantly ) but I love these polls, it really does make me appreciate how lucky I am to be here.

I love Switzerland!!!!

Maybe TheLocal should play the long game and start sponsoring us for each EF kid born.

In 3-4 generations of incentivised fornication, you could definitely take over a small village with a new EF-reading price-complaining, LOLcat-posting, cheddar-seeking population.

Best place to be born in 2013

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU - sister company of The Economist) recently attempted to measure which country will provide the best opportunities for a healthy, safe and prosperous life in the years ahead for babies born in 2013. in short, it asks "in which country is best to be born"? The index this group came up with includes ratings for 80 countries, and is provided in a recent article of the Economist (online) called The Lottery of Life: Where to be born in 2013. Top place is given to Switzerland. ( http://www.economist.com/news/215664...3-lottery-life )

This is not surprising to me. While not perfect, this country, unlike any other I have experienced seems to value peace, democracy, health, education, productivity and culture. On a more personal level, having young children here and being able to participate in the swiss educational system (kindergarten at this point) and all the other things the country has on offer for families with children, I feel very grateful to be here. Only problem is, being born here is no guarantee of being able to stay here. I do, however, feel that for whatever time we are in Switzerland, my children will benefit.

How about you? Do you feel that Switzerland warrants top place on this list?

Re: Best place to be born in 2013

Hey there,

I think it's a very interesting topic. Thanks for posting!
My country is #46 on the list and I feel reasonable that Switzerland got the first place.
I only have 2 things I dislike about the system: health care (that you pay till a certain amount and only above that you get reimbursed) + that only 14/16 weeks a fresh mother can spend home with her baby before returning to work. Otherwise this is a great country to live with exceptional social security.

Cheers,
Vix

The parental leave point is an excellent one. That and the fact that childcare is so very very expensive. Seems to me other countries (Finland for example) easily top switzerland in that aspect. Judging from the source of the index, I am guessing factors such as social mobility, health of the country's economy, and political stability were counted with a bit more weight than the nitty gritty details of actually caring for a baby... I would love to see more on the methodology used in its compilation.

Re: Switzerland best country to be born in!

New Zealand in the top ten, WTF? All the Kiwis left years ago and are now in Australia. Just kidding. Love NZ, Richard Hadllee, Jake the Muss et al.

Some might find it interesting to note that those countries that have been sired by the British Empire predominate the top ranking.

Obviously on drugs to rate France higher than Great Britain.
