Re: Xmas - time to be careful

It's interesting in the sense that the thief knew whom to target.
Not every flight is packed with people carrying five-figures, I presume.

Because you can't get more than CHF 3000/day out of a cash machine?

Also, more than 10k, and you have to declare it at the border. Did he?

Tom
i guess so since he now also reported it to the police. though they told him the chances of getting it back were essentially zip.

i doubt the thieves knew him. they just got lucky.

i guess if you target foreigners coming into the airport, there's a good chance some are carrying lots of cash.

Re: Xmas - time to be careful

That amazes me, that people are out there with that type of cash on them. I guess I live in a different world I would be so nervous if I had that amount on me, it would probably be taped to my body...

I am sometimes shocked when someone pulls out a 500 or even bigger to pay for (big ticket) things. As an American, that is what plastic is for I often wonder if they just have that on them or if they knew they were going out shopping and stopped off at the ATM on the way there. I rarely have more than a couple 100 on me, and usually, it is less than 100...

Re: Xmas - time to be careful

When I travel around, I always carry my jewels in a bag like this that goes under my clothes. Same for cash, credit card, etc.

I don't go around with a fancy brand bag and suitcases to not attract attention. I find it always stupid to see people walking around looking Richy rich on purpose in public places where it is known thieves are operating.

Just a reminder to all that this time of year is a year to be careful of thieves, esp. at airport and railway stations.

A friend of mine just had a bag stolen from him at the airport (snatch and run) and lost a 5 figures sum of Euros in cash Not a good way to start Xmas.
Out of curiosity, where was he when the bag got snatched? Or, put differently, why did he not notice (or not chase them down if he did notice)?

not to give too much details, but he did notice and tried, but a young thief versus a rather elderly guy was no real chance...

i felt really bad for him. as he had a bad few years of business and is now a year from retiring, i know it is not an amount he can really afford to lose.

Doesn't one of the many Swiss insurances cover this?

This is what I know from my own experience.
Cash stolen from my wallet was not covered. The replacement of all items is, with receipts, so the cost of obtaining my replacement Swiss id, etc. Since everything is sent with an invoice, this is all reimbursed. The cost of a new wallet as well.

What was not covered was the cost of cancelling cards, for example, the bank charged me to cancel my EC card. I was furious since they charged to issue a new card as well.

from what i've seen most insurance either doesn't cover cash, or only covers a small amount of cash (say 500 chf).

I always place my wallet in the front pocket in big crowds and try to check every now and then if it is there, along with keys and mobile in the other pocket.
.
ONe of the reasons thieves find it so easy to slide a hand into the correct pocket is that they observe which pocket is being patted occassionally by the owner. Very easy giveaway. Try patting a back pocket instead of the one with the money.

So again, I wonder, why on earth was he carrying so much cash? He may be an older man, but quite frankly he was not thinking like a ature man who knew how to keep himelf or his money safe.

I don't think it's an age thing, but something you learn when you travel outside the bubble of safety. My sisters are older than I am and whenever we go shopping, etc., they drive me bonkers as they leave their pocketbooks unattended sometimes since they just aren't used to thinking about the possibility of it getting stolen. I'm too used to mine being strapped across my body, with it in front of me. Sure, it probably doesn't flatter me but, even if I were carrying only $5, the sheer hassle of cancelling and replacing all the cards and IDs is terrible. I still see women grocery shopping at this time of year in crowded stores leaving their pocketbooks in the carts while getting something off the shelves and I often warn them that it's not a great idea to do that.

Six figures though...wow, those crooks probably couldn't believe their luck that day. I still wonder about my car being robbed in the span of 4 minutes while in a coop pronto where the thieves took my daughter's rucksack and the diaper wipes in the door...only time I've been robbed in over 20 years and it was something of a surprise to have that happen in Switzerland where crime rarely gets mentioned. Folks have to be pretty damn desperate to steal a pack of half-used diaper wipes.

So - to recap - your mate was carrying the boozing money for a group of you (i assume you all chipped in) and he was randomly mugged and lost it all?

Let me guess - he's in shock and not answering his phone?

the booze money was just a joke for those nosey buggers who seem to need to know why he was carrying such an amount.

i don't know and didn't feel the need to ask.
