Xmas - time to be careful

Just a reminder to all that this time of year is a year to be careful of thieves, esp. at airport and railway stations.

A friend of mine just had a bag stolen from him at the airport (snatch and run) and lost a 5 figures sum of Euros in cash Not a good way to start Xmas.

Your friend has my sympathies. He will get reduced to a zero by police and insurance. The problem is not what HE did, the problem is that such thieves practically "smell" lots of money.

What are we to do when getting the job to carry lots of money in cash around ? The husband of the sister of our CEO years ago told me his way "carry the money in a shopping bag of Migros and Coop and use the business suitcase for your underwear and similar stuff ! Yes, a business friend got "robbed" at Stockholm Arlanda Airport some years ago. The robbers apparently jumped to the small bag in which he kept the small exchange but overlooked the shabby larger thing where he had things like passport, air-ticket and the big banknotes. But all this is no recipe you can use, as YOU do not know the thieves, but they possibly know YOU

Your friend has our sympathies but he was dead crazy to carry a 5 figure sum in cash, if he carries that sort of money around and doesnt separate it into concelled belts etc then he only has himself to blame

yes. true. he is normally very careful - but he was picking up a hire care and the trolley with bags was right next to the car and it just took a few seconds.

that area also has no CCTV (presumably the thieves know this).

out of interest, how much money could he have carried before only having himself to blame? would 1000 chfs be OK?

Depends how much money would make you feel horrible when stolen.

Eg. I would feel bad if I had as little as 200 chf stolen, whilst to some people that's pocket change.

Re: Xmas - time to be careful

I am trying to think as to why anyone would be carrying that amount in cash.

A good rule is to never carry more than one is willing to lose.

With the invention of credit and debit cards, electronic bank transfers etc, I just cannot see the reason for anyone here to be travelling with a five figure sum of euro.

Re: Xmas - time to be careful

I tend to believe that people in Zurich atleast are more relaxed about things.
Leaving their belongings unattended to not being careful. They need to realize this is now a problem here too and time to be extra careful. But also carrying such huge sums is always a mistake.

I always place my wallet in the front pocket in big crowds and try to check every now and then if it is there, along with keys and mobile in the other pocket.

I do sympathize with your friend and hope he or she will be able to recover the cash.

Theft is not a problem just as Christmas, it's a year round problem. Last spring I had my wallet stolen out of my purse, which was over my shoulder and has a zipper closure. I was in a clothing store in Baden, I just thought that someone bumped into me while looking at items on the rack behind me. I was very close to the front of the store, near the window, someone took a big chance thinking no one outside would notice. The police said there are some real pros out there and not to blame myself as I never put my purse down and it was closed.

There are no cameras in the store and the staff didn't notice anything.

It wasn't a good day for the thief as I don't carry much cash. But I had to cancel all my cards right away, replace all my i.d., all a very big hassle. I filed a police report but my wallet was never found.

The point is never put your bag down, not even for a second.

Re: Xmas - time to be careful

I was witness to a robbery at Zurich airport. Everything happened so quickly. There was a man in front of me with all his baggage on a trolley who went into the lavatories in front of me. He put his smallest bag on top of the rest and went to the urinal placing his trolley behind him. Half way through his water-letting he shouted out loudly. I was also at the urinal and saw how a figure rushed out of the toilets with the man's bag. We immediately buttoned up and chased him out but too late, he had simply vanished.

Re: Xmas - time to be careful

Someone in another thread on theft once recommended not to carry all of your cards with you in your wallet. Since reading that, I only carry the absolute necessities. I think it's good advice as changing all of your cards is a very tiresome process.

Because you can't get more than CHF 3000/day out of a cash machine?

Also, more than 10k, and you have to declare it at the border. Did he?

I've just removed my cards from my purse, though to be honest, any self respecting pickpocket probably wouldn't want them anyway!
