Most trusted countries in the world

Time to celebrate Switzerland, the Scandanavian countries, Canada, Netherlands and Australia round out the list of the most trusted countries in the world. They are all considered to be much lower on corruption.

Interestingly countries like the UK who thought they sent suppposed criminals or convicts to faraway ülaces like Australia now find themselves looking like they are more untrusted. Guess the criminals were the ones that stayed behind.

Re: Most trusted countries in the world

Well, corruption is mostly hidden by definition (and in a federal state, finding hiding places is an easy task).

And perception might be very clowded.

Imho, it all depends.

The survey doesn't say that. It says that doing business in Australia is more "trusted" than doing business in UK.

But we all know that Australian businesses are run by expat Brits, and British businesses are run by Russians, Greeks and Italians. QED

I'd put Nigeria onto that list. I always trust them to know that they're not getting their goods until the money is in the bank.

It could well be. Could also be Australia's policy of leaving illegal immigrants to die on remote islands rather than let them into their country keeping their trustworthiness up - good planning there.

The group’s “poll of polls” incorporates results of up to a dozen surveys on perceptions of public sector corruption as held by analysts, businesspeople and local residents..
Seems to me that the points highlighted above are crucial in order to interpret the results of this survey correctly.

They must not have read the headlines about the mayors of Montreal and Laval Quebec resigning, or the judicial removal of the mayor of Toronto for conflict of interest or the Canadian federal sponsorship scandal of 2004.

Nothing to be proud of there.

The fact he had resign is broadly a good indicator.

I love Montréal, but I hate the corruption in Québec. It was always so obvious to me but somehow my friends didn't see it and were surprised by this. Plenty of good things about the place though.

No, not a good indicator. At this point, it doesn't matter who is the muppet at the head of the city as long as the mafia still there doing the corruption. What surprised people back home is not the corruption but the amount of people being corrupted in all the government sphere.

They have to eradicate the mafia all together, but then what? Other groups will take over. I am not surprised but rather disillusioned on how easy it is to corrupt people and how many people are willing to play the game.

Hardly surprising NZ came top of the list given its low population.

Re: Most trusted countries in the world

Corruption in Quebec and particularly Montreal was a fact of life I grew up with, as it was a big open secret. Everyone knew the construction industry was bent, the unions corrupt, everyone knew who the mafia bosses were at every level, etc, etc. The motives behind the merger of the municipalities was always looked on as being highly suspicious. It's only when Montreal literally started falling apart a few years ago that it became a real issue in the public mind, and even then it took years before any real change even started. What's going on know is cathartic and necessary and way overdue, but better late than never!

I love my hometown and part of its charm is its anarchical side, but widespread corruption is an evil that I certainly won't miss. I hope people remain vigilant and that this is remains an ongoing process.

Re: Most trusted countries in the world

it isn't just the corruption at the municipal level. it was at the provincial level as well.

also the fact that if you applied for a job anywhere, and your name wasn't Lévesque or Lemieux, etc. you didn't get hired.

It really is too bad as I really really love Montréal. I am getting a little homesick thinking about it.

Does anybody know if the corruption index is on an in-group basis or does it take into account global interconnection? On a strictly "in-group" basis it's not an impossible concept.

Well what I know is that working in London for a Brit company I have to reconsider the corrupted mechanism of recommendation in Italy: at least there we do it because we need desperetely a job.
Here (in London) it's more like a national sport where the most lazy, most useless, but most ass kisser is getting promoted and rewarded!
