Most probably won't be able to, although many will tell themselves that they can...

What difference does the frame speed make if the film itself is a load of puerile shite?

Well, it's the Hobbit. A three hour film based on a book about pixies and goblins written for nine year olds.

Hardly Lawrence of Arabia, is it?

When it is shown at 24fps, I wonder if there is any noticeable difference between a version showing the odd and one showing the even frames.

Technically I think it's a three hour film based on only one third of a book about pixies and goblins written for nine year olds. The other two thirds of the book are still to come.

I suppose that could also be one third of a 9 hour film etc. etc.

Nine hours? For the Hobbit?

Re: Which cinemas are showing the hobbit in 48 fps?

I liked the 48 fps version, smoothes out 3D a great deal. No more strobing and almost no ghosting. Takes only a minute to get used to. In Geneva the HFR version is only in French, though.

That said, there's no point if you just want to watch it in 2D. As much as I enjoy 3D when it's done well, I can't help but think that 48fps is a solution in search of a problem.

DB, can you do us a favor and not suck the air out of this discussion? People who want to enjoy the movie and have an interest in the techniques being used would like to discuss it without you poo-pooing everything. Move along.

my thoughts exactly, 3 films for LOtR's is understandable, not for the hobbit.

Re: Which cinemas are showing the hobbit in 48 fps?

Thought the movie was very average. Possibly entertaining for 10-15 year olds, but just nonsense and utterly dull if your idea of going to the movies is to be entertained.

No parts II or III for me when they beckon next year.

Oh and a tip for life. If you're ever stuck up a tree with wild beasts ready to rip you to shreds, just throw a lit pine cone at them and carry on wandering around New Zealand aimlessly to find a dragon who sleeps under a pile of gold coins for about 100 years at a time .....

There was definitely much less a sense of palpable danger in the action sequences, almost nothing like there was in the LOTR trilogy. But it's a worthy prequel, IMO.

I wonder if they'll ever attempt the Silmarillion? To those of you who don't know, if the Hobbit and LOtR's was the 3rd age, The Silmarillion is the 1st age.

No, Tolkien's estate refuses to sell them the rights. They only have the rights to The Hobbit, and LOTR and its Appendices (which they're using to fill in gaps for the new Hobbit movies). Christopher Tolkien even disowned his son for consulting on the LOTR movies, reportedly, so I doubt they'll get much help. Which is why they're making The Hobbit movies as 3 long films. They know that this is their last stab at the material, so they're throwing in everything but the kitchen sink that they currently have the rights to.

shame, the 1st Age converted into a few films would be epic.
