Pity an aquaintance of mine.
He's the effects supervisor at Peter Jackson's Weta Digital in NZ & has had to work on the buggers for the past 3 yrs...

Awesome isn't it? They apparently added in a bunch of stuff from the unedited version of the book. The middle part of the first movie was great:

'The Hobbit' To Feature 53-Minute-Long Scene Of Bilbo Baggins Trying To Figure Out What To Pack

Quote:
“At first it seems as though it’s going to be a short little montage of him packing, with jaunty music playing, but after a minute or two the music sort of fades out and it’s just a long take of Bilbo quietly looking through drawers,” Boston Globe critic Ty Burr told reporters. “Sometimes he says things out loud like, ‘Oh, Bilbo, where did you put that sweater?’ Other times he’s just muttering indecipherably. And then a lot of the time—most of the time, really—he’s dead quiet.”
Quote:
The film’s director, Peter Jackson, expressed excitement about the film’s premiere, and hinted that the second film in the Hobbit trilogy would chronicle Bilbo’s return to the Shire after he realizes he forgot his toiletries bag.

Re: Which cinemas are showing the hobbit in 48 fps?

So, we went to see it last night...

First of all, the book upon which the film is based is absurd. If you read it as a child, then you'll know it is charming and lovely but it is most definitely a children's book, with goblins and dwarves and elves and all that Enid Blyton nonsense. Nothing wrong with that, of course, if you're nine, but I doubt many adults who don't know the book will get much from it.

If you do know the book, and remember how charming and lovely it is, the film might come as something of a shock. There is almost nothing of the original, rather quaint and homely, spirit of the book, but rather some pretty nasty violence, a lot of outrageously silly action, and plenty of daft made up stuff that bears as little relationship to Mr Tolkien's book as Star Wars or The Matrix might. It's a great action film, for sure, but The Hobbit was nothing like the film I saw last night.

So, if you don't know the book but you're over the age of 11, I can't see how it would be very satisfying, being about elves, dwarves and goblins; but if you do know the book, I can't see how you wouldn't be disappointed by the appalling liberties Mr Jackson has made with a well-known and well-loved children's book. The film is neither arsehole nor cucumber: neither a film suitable for adults, nor a film suitable for children. Perhaps 17 year olds might like it, if they can handle a wizard riding a sleigh pulled by bunny rabbits without cracking up in the cinema.

Oh, and expect the urge to throw up every time the camera wheels around a cavernous pit full of goblins at dizzying and wholly unnecessary speed. All very clever, I'm sure, but flash doesn't always mean good.

In a nutshell: a competent action film, with a bunny rabbit sleigh. If that's your thing, whether at 24 or 48 fps, then have at it!

Thanks for the reviews. So I should see

"mein Erster Berg, ein Rigi Film"

instead? It sounds quite similar.

Re: Which cinemas are showing the hobbit in 48 fps?

Your reductive arguments concerning drawves, goblins, etc. being interesting only for children aside, I will agree on one thing: while LOTR was instantly accessible for those not fans of the material, The Hobbit is anything but. I remember not knowing anything about the LOTR back in 2001 and just being completely blown away. That movie wasn't a sure-fire success, it had something to prove. The Hobbit is for a built-in fanbase and acts like it, taking its sweet time with the money being thrown on the screen. While LOTR was an engaging movie experience for all but the most fantasy-phobe of moviegoers, I get the feeling a significant portion of The Hobbit's audience will find it interminable.

True. Towards the end, I found myself checking my watch every five minutes or so. It just went on and on and on and on and on...

Sounds like the sort of thing they could use at Guantanamo.

"Tell us! - or we'll show you the bloody goblin film again!"

"Ok, ok, ok - I tell you everything!"

No, it wasn't.
