Re: Need a witness for Irish Passport renewal

Don't know about the rules for Irish passports. For UK it is enough to get someone Swiss or British who is in one of certain professions e.g. bank officer. Finding a bank officer in CH is not so difficult.

Re: Need a witness for Irish Passport renewal

You could get it done at the local town offices, though it may cost you CHF 20.

If you are working here, your company accountant might do it. By the way, are there other countries with a similar requirement?
Yes provided they are a member of one of the listed accounting bodies.

A banker is the easiest - you don't have to show that you are actually qualified

I think a bank employee is enough - eg someone employed in the IT section. Just hang around Grumpy's cheese stand long enough to find one.

I've never understood why the authorities think that bank managers or accountants are more respectable than bin collectors or loo cleaners. For my UK passport I just use colleagues, who are engineers. Never had a problem.

Re: Need a witness for Irish Passport renewal

I had a big problem trying to find someone to simply sign that they`d seen ME sign my document - to be a witness.

Tried the bank, the PO, neighbours - they all made me feel like a criminal trying to lure them into some deep dark intrigue.

I ended up going to a Notary - cost Sfr20 to have my signature verified by a counter signature.

You must be in the handelsregister as having permission to sign on behalf of the bank. If the Irish Embassy decides to check and the person is not... then you get to do it all over again.

Hi
I had this problem and asked the Gemeinde, as we had been here 5 years so they knew me.He complained a bit but did it in the end, looked good with all the official stamps and I got my UK passport.
Good luck.

Unfortunately the list for an Irish passport is much shorter:

- Member of the Garda Síochána
- Member of clergy
- Medical doctor
- Lawyer
- Bank manager/assistant bank manager
- Elected public representative
- Notary public/ commissioner for oaths
- Peace commissioner
- School principal/vice principal
- Accountant

Agreed. I've countersigned UK colleagues passport and DL applications as a UK registered engineer, no worries. Not recognised by my native country however!

Hope it happens faster than my last renewal in 2009, I didn't get the cancelled one back either.

Re: Need a witness for Irish Passport renewal

Bump.

Looking at the list of people who can say i am me on the application and photos, can i just ask at the Bank. They will know i have an account with them, and can certify that i am me on my photos.

I am going to ring the Embassy tomorrow so that they send me the papers to fill. But i don't know anyone who can do the above. 107 francs for a passport!!! And it takes ten weeks to come back, the one i have is good until January and from what i have read i have to send it with the application.

What happens if i have to go home for an emergency during that time? Never mind, i shall ask when i call tomorrow. From what i remember ten years ago, the lady is very nice on the phone.

A bit of a laugh now, i am going to use my mum's credit card to pay for the passport. She asked me if it was a British one - having forgotten that i have an Irish one since 10 years!!!

Never been a problem for a UK passport - though I only ever ask colleagues who are authorised officer and up.

Went to a doctor and had a check up for 120CHF and told them of my problem with the passport. They said they would sign it for me and they did. Two weeks later I got another bill for 80CHF (Consultation). 200CHF for the stamp on the Passport Application! Got to repeat the step next year for my son and really looking forward to it.
I had the same problem with an Irish state pension application. Had a checkup last Thursday, my family doctor just stamped it and signed it. No extra charges - I'm amazed at your guy as above.

Re: Need a witness for Irish Passport renewal

Police in Lausanne will refuse to do it however the nice friendly people at the police station in the center of bern stamped and signed it for me on the day I was in bern to go to the embassy. All I had to do was show them my current passport and my B permit.

Rarely required for UK passports. It's only if you can't be recognised from the previous photo, i.e. your appearance has changed dramatically, or if your passport been lost, stolen or damaged. If it's none of these then it doesn't need signing by anyone.

Countersignatories

Get your application form and 1 of your photos signed by someone else to prove your identity if either:
  • you can’t be recognised from the photo in your existing passport
  • you’re replacing a lost, stolen or damaged passport
https://www.gov.uk/renew-adult-passport

I haven't had mine signed for years when renewing. Just complete the form, pay the fee and get a new passport.

And children under 16 also need the photos countersigned. ( I guess they're more likely to fall into the can't be recognised category).

I've countersigned loads of passport photos over the years and never had any problems. It says that the passport office may contact you regarding the applicant but it's never happened to me yet.

Re: Need a witness for Irish Passport renewal

Well, i talked to the nice lady in Berne.

About perhaps needing to travel - my current passport runs out in January. She said to include a stamped addressed envelope with the application, they will send my current one back to me and e-mail me when the new one arrives and then i send the current one back to them and they send the new one.

I can finally use some of those free stamps!!
