Strange - I can only hear them when the wind blows.

They've just started here, right on time.

Once again, I'm reassured I'll be duly warned in case of atomic attack.
When we hear the sirens we are supposed to switch on the TV or listen to the Swiss radio broadcast.

Nothing! Only a doctor series on TV ...

Not just an atomic attack, it can be a natural disaster such as a flood, or a chemical leak etc.

Have you noticed the siren sounds are different each time?

It always makes me think of the siren from The Time Machine that signals the Eloi to go and be eaten by the Morloks.

I remember that in the telephone book there's a page at the beginning where the different sounds are explained as well as their meanings. They use drawings of little waves to describe the sounds, but so far I've never managed to connect a drawing with a sound during siren testing!

Hi all !

My first post here.

Thanks for the warning, I really was wandering what the heck was the siren I was listening.. Still, to it's purpose, it wasn't very loud to be honest.. I live 3km away of Moutier.

The general alarm is first at 13.30 for one minute and repeated two minutes later.
The flood alert warning for people living in areas at risk (near dams etc) starts at from 14.15 and can be up to 15.00.
It's possible that you never hear the flood alert warning if you're not in one of the affected areas.

We got two sets of testing today, but no idea what they were for!

I live close to the Leman lake, but I suppose I'll botice it all by myself if it starts flooding!

Twice in Rotkreuz as well, at 13:30 and 13:45. Barely audible from the meeting room I was in though, we would all be doomed if the end of the world happened during a meeting in a room with a noisy beamer

We had a second (third?) round of 'generals' at about 13:45, just as I was walking past the Gemeindehaus with the alarm speakers on top. Both kiddos slept right through it.

...and yet if I want to blow my nose I have to get up and go into another room to do it. Babies really are peculiar little creatures.

Thanks for that but for the first time ever I actually heard them just now and from the comfort of my armchair.
Maybe they've turned the volume up this year.

They adjusted the positions

Re: Nationwide siren test - this Wednesday 13:30

Ahh, I had not seen this thread nor read/heard about these tests. I was a freaked out noob Also, my husband is an asshole...

I heard it and wondered what it was, I called my husband to ask but his phone went to voicemail. A couple of seconds later he called me back and said "it's an avalanche warning, you have to move towards the lake!" I was like, what, seriously? I felt doubtful, but he said yes. I actually have to leave the house, are you sure??? He said yes!!! Oh.... ok then...

So I did! I put my phone in my pocket and told the kids to put their shoes on quickly, they were asking what's the matter so I told them what he'd said They were panicking grabbing their favourite teddies in a hurry! We'd just got coated and booted and were halfway out the door when he called me back to tell me he was just joking

Haha was laughing about it for the rest of the day but at the time it was a bit scary, when you don't know any better and you have young children what are you supposed to think? Cant take any chances!

I'd never heard anything like that before, in the UK they either don't have them, don't test them or the noise is drowned out by all the noise of the big cities? I dont know, I never heard one in 32 years anyway

They were ear-piercingly loud from here and we heard at least 4 of the general ones and later at least 3 of the water ones, they didn't stop until after 14.30. Each time they started up again the kids were asking me "is this a real one? Are you sure? But how do you know?!" gah it was a tiring afternoon!

Seemed to go on all afternoon in Pfäffikon. I can only assume on top of the general and flood alarms we also tested the "cows are attacking" and the "taxes are rising" alarms too.

Was an interesting occurrence for me yesterday. Hearing sirens go off in the neighbourhood. Btw, is it always a Wednesday?

Of course, if the real thing happens on that day and time we'll all be fried because we'll think it's just a test.

Yes maybe the testing date should be every 1.April for best consideration.
