13:37 and no siren.

I can't be THAT deaf, we work near one of those things.
Is today Wednesday in your part of Switzerland?

Tom

Oh my god. My flu has made my brain as woolly as F.

Thanks for the groan. A hanky and a couple of paracetamols would have hit the spot better...

Right. And I can't see too many people saying "two thousand and twenty".
I'm sure there'll be a few!

Right. And I can't see too many people saying "two thousand and twenty". I hope that 2020 heralds the beginning of a return to normality. After all, who says "one thousand and sixty-six and all that"?
That would be twenty-twenty. Expect many hindsight puns that year (also because of US presidential election). The normalization will be 21. That year the 21st century becomes finally adult in any country: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_of_majority#Age_21

(Nitpick: Save the problem that we are not 0 based. How is this handled with the Human Era calendar?)

(Exactly. The 21st Century won't reach majority until 01.01.2022. So don't offer it a beer in the US before then.)

Alarms

Am hearing a very unusual siren type alarm coming from the village below my house - is today the day when the Swiss test these things....or should I be more worried??

I wish they'd just drop the bomb so that I don't need to hear the air-raid sirens any longer!

Be worried, very, very worried.

Re: Nationwide siren test - this Wednesday 13:30

yeah, foolish me, didn't check historic threads, and combined with the lights that started flickering in my office (ooooh, spooky), was actually wondering whether I should start drinking early to prepare for an avalanche onslaught or some such thing....I'd have no hope in you know where to get out of the way in time so best just to get comfortable!

Aaaaaaaa...that's what it was. Aha. I was wondering at half past one what the noise was. Cute little sirens.

Unlike the commie beasts that used to imprint in one's audio memory for days.

Depends how far from them you live. Our's used to be on a little fire-fight house next door until that was bought by a private person and the sirene was (re)moved.
