They're for people within a 20km radius of a nuclear power station ( in Switzerland) so you're probably too far away.
It's possible that you're actually nearer to a French one than a Swiss one.

No. You should be more worried about cancers caused by smoking*

*which you say you do on numerous threads.

They are kept for people worth saving, the rest of you will die that bit quicker.

I read recently that taking the iodine pills stops radioactive products entering the thyroid gland. But once you have finished growing they are not much use.

After moving around between Bern and Avenches, over the years I have been given several packets. I will send you one if you are desperate.

Today is the the day. Don't all run for the bunkers when the sirens go off at around 1.30pm today.

Wow thank you for this, Belgianmum! I certainly did not know this. And the baby normally sleeps around that time.

Oh goodness, I'd forgotten. Thanks for the heads-up, BM.

(Toddles off to cancel afternoon appointments. Can't leave the mutts alone during a siren test, for fear of post-it notes...)

And will today, too -- unless you live right next to a siren, it won't be ear-shatteringly loud. If your baby can manage church bells, s/he will sleep through the gentle, lulling tones of the imminent disaster warning sirens.

These are coming from the fire station? I live just next door to one. I'll try to adjust his schedule a little bit.

Exactly.
I've only actually been able to hear them once in the five years we've been here so unless you live really close to the loudspeaker it's not normally an issue.

Edit: posts crossed. Next to the fire station may be a bit loud so adjusting his schedule would probably be a good thing to try.

Thank you so much. He sleeps through the church bells so we'll find out.
In Portugal every town does it every Wednesday at 12 o'clock which is a lot worse. Or did, maybe this has changed in the meantime.

That is the strangest sounding horn... ZH

I'm guessing it's JUST A TEST, but what would we do if it wasn't.

I wasn't in school that day.

Annual nationwide test first Wednesday of February.

Nationwide siren test - this Wednesday 13:30

Ours hasn't happened yet - usually around 3.30pm for us.

As for what to do - tune in to Swiss radio/TV for announcements - which is fine if you understand French, German, Italian or Romansch.

Geneva : Sirens test on February 1th (3rd Feb this year of course)

If it happens at any other time than early February, doesn't stop and it hasn't been reported in the papers etc, grab your iodine tablets and head for the cellar!

Thank Crunchie for this thread - I thought something critical at Silkwood was about to detonate.

Jeebers. I was busy telling Little Rufus not to worry it's just a big fire engine noise... when I realised it wasn't. And then it ended on one of those embarrassed clicks that car alarms make.
