I was in Texas four times over the years (76, 82,88, 97) for clearly more than a week and there was never any kind of alarm. You of course now will tell that Texas is not the USA
Likewise - 3 yrs. in California and no sirens to be heard ....... although there were plenty walking about.

The first time I ever went to Olten, I stepped off the train and immediately the sirens started.

Now if that's not fate giving you a sign, what is?
It may also have been a local thing. Olten is heavily guarded by military structures, and by Olten I do not mean the insignificant town nobody really cares for but the rail-station and the nearby highways, which all are strategically located.

Ok, so to be clear, are these like Air Raid sirens? I was under the impression they were for storms or flood...

Look at it this way - if you hear them at any other time, don't look skywards and find your nearest lead-lined, sealed fall-out shelter (and don't forget your tabs).

I am not alone in not be telling the difference, even if you can find it in the inernet. As one of responsibilty said last year "the main thing is to make people aware that something unusual goes on. We will give full info over internet, radio and TV"

The siren is not to be mocked. It is real and should be considered to be the official warning of impending nuclear war. Basically your time is up. Would suggest grabbing the nearest human and hugging them passionately or making love next to the office photocopier.

I haven't checked in a while, but normally at the beginning of the official phone books you have a little explanation on what the alarms are for.

If I remember correctly the length and intensity of the signal is supposed to tell you what's going on. There's some funny wavy lines in the phone books to describe the different kinds of alarms.

This is all a souvenir from WW2 indeed.

It's more of a cold-war relic.

They used to have them in the U.K. Ours was on top of the school and tested every Monday during double-maths.

They stopped testing and maintaining them when they realised that people had cottoned on to the fact that hiding under the kitchen table with a few throw-cushions wouldn't help much with a 10 Megaton bomb blast.

Exactly. Ok so there is a nuclear attack in Switzerland and we all hear the sirens and we go to the shelters and survive. Then what? How many years will we have to stay in until its safe to go out again?

It's more than a cold-war relic. It's also for other dangers, natural or human-made.

it's depends how *sounds* the sirens. I think you've got the explanation in phone-directory books.

When hearing those sirens, when not announced, people should listen to public radio to get the informations.

Now, I heard the Daleks could attack us today.... there's some rumors....

Can you imagine sitting in a bunker with your neighbours for weeks and weeks?

I am certain half the population would be killed, inside the bunkers!

Re: Nationwide siren test - this Wednesday 13:30

When the sirens went off in Germany, every Saturday noon we all knew that the Ruß is a coming, it was a joke for us kids.
For the older generation siren tests must have been traumatic though, grandma used to get very nervous, she was hitting the grog by one o'clock and spent the rest of the afternoon mumbling about the evil "Ruß" (the Russian, pronounced Ruzz)
Sirens were not always a lark.

Take a battery operated radio with you or hope one is in the shelter and listen to it for instructions... that's what I always thought I'd do
