Re: Alarms in Zürich

It sounded like a different Alarm this year. It sounded of dread.

I really wanted to post up my picture, you know, for the deaf people of the forum.

No, sounded as the same every year. Hopefully there's a guidance on what to do somewhere. Personally, I just take it as a good indication to get out of the wine cellar once in a while...

Why didn't you post the English language version?

Oh dear, I didn't hear anything today. No siren for me.

They just know you are expendable... Get the little red book and they will fix the alarm!

Alert for Newbies: in August 2005, the River Aare flooded, and the older parts of the city of Berne were about 1.5 meters deep in river water. The sirens for high water went off at 11 pm all over Bern, and nobody really knew why, except of course the people living down by the river.

There is no "which" Alarm... There is an Alarm... If you hear it and don't know why, turn on local TV channel/Radio for the information...

Why don't they just send us a Whatsapp or post it on Facebook? Cuts down on the noise and more people will actually see and understand it.

In my experience, 90% of people hearing an alarm siren simply wonder why they are testing that and how do they turn it off. In my office they only began to get a decent response to alarms when they added a voice message to the alarm telling everyone to get the f*** out.

Even then most people first look out of the window to see if there's any actual flames before deciding what to do.

Well that's just human stupidity... We never consider anything serious... My office building had an alarm once... Nobody reacted until the firemen 5min later came up and wondered why we were still inside... We all thought it was the machinery in the garage (the alarm sounded only like 15sec)

Anothertime was at the luggage claim Zürich Airport where a warning was made twice to leave the area calmly... I had my baggage and was leaving already... Took a third announcement "this is no joke, get the f**k out!" ... thankfully nobody paniced...

No. There are TWO alarms - one general and one for flooding, you can listen to them from my post above.

General alarm, constant whiiuuuwhiiiuuuwhiiiuuu: Close the windows, check radio, and internet what the is going on.

Flood alarm Wooooo pause Wooooo pause Woooo etc.: Get out of here and run for the hills. If you hear it in Zurich City you have approx 20 minutes until the flood wave from the Sihlsee arrives. You better be not in ground floor or underground.

Re: Nationwide siren test - this Wednesday 13:30

From my link above:

General alert signal

The general alert signal is a regular ascending and descending tone. It lasts for one minute and is repeated once after a two-minute interval. Behaviour to adopt when the general alert is raised:
  • Listen to the radio;
  • Follow instructions issued by the authorities;
  • Inform your neighbours.
Water alert signal

The water alert signal consists of low continuous twenty-second tones at ten-second intervals. Behaviour to adopt when the water alert is sounded:
  • Leave the at-risk area immediately;
  • Follow instructions given on local information sheets.
And go to Verbier's or my links to hear the two alert signals.

Last year the emergency alarm went off in the Ausserschwyz area... and there was nothing on the news, anywhere, no info at all.

And since there was no info available, no one did anything. We all just stood around wondering what was going on.

If the Sihlsee had overrun it's banks, many of us would have been underwater by the time official info started to percolate through the system.

(Worse, if it had been nuclear holocaust, or an invasion by the Zürchers, we might not have had time to drink our bomb-shelters-cum-wine-cellars dry. )

Turns out the alarm went off by mistake. And since unplanned, no info available.

But if it went off in a real situation surely that would be unplanned too?

Or are the Swiss so organized that they plan a flood or nuclear holocaust in advance?

Of course they are.

Hence the requirement that one must schedule a plane hijacking during standard business hours, if one wishes to be met by Swiss Airforce jets.

(When I first arrived here and asked about the set-up for dealing with an after-hours veterinary crisis, the response was "Well in Switzerland we do ask that you schedule your emergencies three weeks in advance." To this day, I'm still not entirely sure that was a joke... )

Apparently they're already on it, coming your way in 2017:

Alarm per App

Mit dem nun lancierten System namens Alertswiss macht der Bund einen ersten Schritt. Ab sofort wird die Bevölkerung im Katastrophenfall zusätzlich zu den herkömmlichen Alarmierungen über eine Webseite (alertswiss.ch), eine Smartphone-App, über Twitter (@alertswiss) und Youtube informiert.

Roughly:

The Bund takes the first step with the launch of the 'Alert Swiss' system. In addition to conventional alarms, in case of disaster the population will be informed via a website (alertswiss.ch), a smartphone app, on Twitter and Youtube.

But they are still keeping the sirens.
