Right. And I can't see too many people saying "two thousand and twenty". I hope that 2020 heralds the beginning of a return to normality. After all, who says "one thousand and sixty-six and all that"?
That would be twenty-twenty. Expect many hindsight puns that year (also because of US presidential election). The normalization will be 21. That year the 21st century becomes finally adult in any country: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_of_majority#Age_21

(Nitpick: Save the problem that we are not 0 based. How is this handled with the Human Era calendar?)

(Exactly. The 21st Century won't reach majority until 01.01.2022. So don't offer it a beer in the US before then.)

Alarms

Am hearing a very unusual siren type alarm coming from the village below my house - is today the day when the Swiss test these things....or should I be more worried??

It’s siren test day, nothing to worry about.

I wish they'd just drop the bomb so that I don't need to hear the air-raid sirens any longer!

Be worried, very, very worried.

Re: Nationwide siren test - this Wednesday 13:30

yeah, foolish me, didn't check historic threads, and combined with the lights that started flickering in my office (ooooh, spooky), was actually wondering whether I should start drinking early to prepare for an avalanche onslaught or some such thing....I'd have no hope in you know where to get out of the way in time so best just to get comfortable!

Aaaaaaaa...that's what it was. Aha. I was wondering at half past one what the noise was. Cute little sirens.

Unlike the commie beasts that used to imprint in one's audio memory for days.

Depends how far from them you live. Our's used to be on a little fire-fight house next door until that was bought by a private person and the sirene was (re)moved.

Re: Nationwide siren test - this Wednesday 13:30

Is there a siren test in Basel? My sister just told me it went off twice this morning. Can't find any info.

Edit: Yes, it was a "test" that went wrong

I found reassuring news on the website

https://www.alert.swiss/en/home.html

Maybe time to try the app Alertswiss? I'm not sure I still want to rely on the fact that nobody around me is worried.

Re: Nationwide siren test - this Wednesday 13:30

Remember, is is once again the first week of February.

https://www.alert.swiss/en/precautio...ng-sirens.html

Test day: first Wednesday in February

Every year, on the first Wednesday in February, all sirens across Switzerland are tested. The public is notified beforehand through announcements on the radio, on TV and in the press. The general public is not required to respond in a particular way or take protective measures, but simply requested in advance to excuse the inconvenience caused by the noise of the sirens.

Two alarm signals

At 1.30 p.m. the ‘general alert’ signal is sounded throughout Switzerland. This is a regular ascending and descending tone, which lasts for one minute, and is repeated once after a two-minute interval. Where necessary, the sirens can continue to be tested until 2 p.m. From 2.15 to 3 p.m. (at the latest), the „water alert“ signal is tested in those areas that are close to dams. It consists of twelve low continuous tones lasting twenty seconds and repeated at ten-second intervals. The function of a total of 7,200 sirens is tested.

Re: Siren Test Wednesday 3 Feb 2021

It's always at the same time and always on the first Wednesday in February.

(except the time that they had to do a second test some months later due to a failed first test)

Always a great time to check your double glazing's up to scratch.
