Re: Nationwide siren test - this Wednesday 13:30

It just hit me what the noise was....man, I hopeI'll never need to identify it in an emergency situation.

Reminded me, awwww. Ok, I'll share. So there was a concert by National Symphony announced to be shared by giant public speakers recently in CZ (those communal ones, on big poles and corners of town halls), all across the country. A solid need to uplift the national morale, in the times of complete dispair. Some sweet people I know went to the public sirens instead and missed the broadcasting. It's probably for the better, no need to calculate safe distances. Still.

I wish we had public speakers here and amps and some positive program on it..for those who have to get out of homes or are lonely at home. I know some would hate the noise, but. Force majeure.

Ours are going off now. Is this system seriously still needed in this day & age?

Germany seems to think so as I've been told today they've been reintroducing their siren system. And remember, not all of us have mobile phones for alerts.

What should I expect, then...we trained with Russkies for American invasion, every 6mo. With sirens, gas masks and all.

Can't believe J missed this cute thing today, sniff.

Same here While it was on I thought I should check out which sound is what .... that was yesterday, long forgotten.
Well, at least I will know something is up.

Why, have you learnt to sense when the water is coming?
I used to live in Adliswil, it was essential to know that sound (I used to back then too).

It's the fire brigade that does it. In some circumstances, they are called upon to alert the inhabitants of a certain area and, if necessary, help coordinate evacuation efforts too. They must pick different areas of town to do the test in. Mind you, I think it's been at least five years since I was actually at home during the test, so they may always have done it and I never noticed.

We had a year of emergency, sorta..This "regular" emergency awareness almost brings a sence of normalcy.

Mr Wishes says that's what they did the area of the holiday home where they stayed as kids. The Post truck drove around with a siren wailing, up and down all the little roads up in Emmenthal.

How would you know if it was a real emergency when they've announced that a test is taking place and the two happened to take place at the same time?

Glad you didn't complain that the alarm wasn't on 27/7 during that year.

Winning the lotto is a better bet in this case, I suspect.

Unless the Germans plan their attack on our alarm-day. After all, it's widely published. So what do you think, Tom?

No need to panic. As of last month, for the first time in Switzerland's history we now have two—yes, count 'em, two!—F/A-18 Hornet attack fighter jets standing by, ready to scramble and get into action any time of the day or night, with just 15 minutes' notice! That should keep is all safe, even if the pesky enemy decides to invade in the dead of night instead of waiting for the sirens for cover.

Of course, that's unless those invaders also happen to have fighter planes or even bombers that could take out the Hornets before they've even warmed up. Even if they also had relatively slow (and old) F/A-18s, it would take them just under 3.5 minutes to fly at top speed (1,915 km/h) from the northern border with Germany to the centre of Switzerland. So the 15 minutes' notice really isn't worth much.

Maybe the government could sound the sirens half an hour before any enemy threat is apparent?

Yeah but they - in your example - would have to cross Germany first.
We might as well mothball those two F/A-18 again.

Why do you think we enjoy being an island but not in the sea?
