I've been in Switzerland (before joining EF), I can only recall them being tested 1x per year - at this time. Any other occurrence heard, would be for a local, not national reasons.

as follows: Siren test
The annual siren test takes place in Switzerland on the first Wednesday of February. It is organised by the Federal Office for Civil Protection (FOCP) in cooperation with the cantons, communes and dam operators. At this time, not only general alert sirens but also water alert sirens are tested to see if they are in working order. People are given advance notice about the siren test on television broadcasts as well as in the newspapers. The siren tests do not require the population to take any special measures.

The 8000 siren tests start today at 13:30 in about 54 minutes time.

My (swiss) colleague insisted to open the window so we could hear them.
30 second passed and I already want to kill him!

Just sitting here checking new posts with Sirens blazing and wondering what it was all about - and then EF is there with the answer. Lasted just a few seconds.

I was wondering when the first post concerning the siren-tests would appear
To all who weren't around last year: no panic, they're just testing

In my Stadt, it was loud but blunt, certainly more pleasant than the ones coming from the neighbouring communes which were of the piercing kind.

Here near Baden (AG) it honestly sounded like a high-school band trombone player with a couple of his buddies drunk on a Friday night practicing for the "Fahnenmarsch"...

Been here 17 years and I still hate the sound of the damn things, and you can't get away from the eeriness of it all. Two seconds in and I was already subconsciously wondering which bunker to head for! Being outside I also caught myself looking up at the sky. Strange. Never been in a war, but that sound just speaks for itself....
