Normally, yes. Germany is an exception, as you can't take on German citizenship until you have renounced your original (unless you are Swiss or EU)

I wasn’t clear. Do you need to be a dual citizen to be in the group. Am applying for Swiss citizenship later this year.

No, I'm still in it despite having given up my US 11 years ago (pre FATCA).

To join our group (several members from Switzerland), we ask for dual (US & other), ex-expat (other) or shortly before getting your other/Swiss citizenship. If you‘d like an invite even earlier, friend me and drop me a PM.

Not sure if this is the best place, but anyhow, came across another group out there fighting US citizen based taxation. They are also doing a survey at the moment for current and former US citizens and Green card holders, on how US policy impacts US persons abroad.

Re: Giving up the blue passport because of FATCA - one member's experience

Having just filed (and paid for the preparation of ) my US taxes, I am about to pull the plug on my US passport. Honestly, I wouldn't mind keeping it if FACTA didn't exist, but this is just bullshit.

It seems a shame that the US is chasing away so many citizens with this. Granted, I don't want to ever move back to the US, but by giving up my passport, this guarantees it. I imagine this is the same for thousands of ex-Americans, as well.

Fortunately the Covid stimulus checks I've received will pay the renunciation costs
