where can you buy a laptop that's not too expensive?

My laptop has pretty much eaten it and I really need a new one. I'm a bit afraid of the prices that I might find in a shop in Switzerland though. Any advice? I'm in Lausanne. Should I try going over to France to find something cheaper? Or would you guys happen to know somewhere I could go in Switzerland to find something good?

Thanks!

Re: where can you buy a laptop that's not too expensive?

CH is not sooo expensive for electricals.

Digitec, Inter Discount, Media Markt, Manor ...... even Conforama, although after sales and service also has to be considered.

Check the ad mags in your mail box for bargain offers.

!
Why? The price of electricals is pretty cheap here.

The last laptop I bought was about 120 CHF cheaper here than in France, Germany or the UK (including import duty and not paying VAT in the country of purchase). You might get cheaper in the US or Singapore, but that's about it once you include shipping and import tax.

Mine was cheapest in Digitec. Steg was OK for other models and Conforama often has good deals on older models.

Re: where can you buy a laptop that's not too expensive?

I have seen prices in US, Singapore, UK, DE and CH.

CH has the cheapest price. Perhaps it is the strength of the CHF against all the other currency.

The other posts contain the major electronic stores, please try them.
Again, you said "not too expensive"...what is that?
300chf?
500chf?
1kchf?

You have to be quite specific with the specs and also the requirements. A simple tablet from Samsung is now 199chf in M-electronics?
A laptop can be as cheap as 399chf.
Anything goes.

Good luck.

Re: where can you buy a laptop that's not too expensive?

France is a bad idea - they have a completely different keyboard. So, you will not be able to buy off the shelf.

I agree that laptops are not expensive in CH.

You do know you can walk into a shop like M Electronics (other electrical retailers are available) and just browse don't you?

Re: where can you buy a laptop that's not too expensive?

IMHO, Digitec has the best combination of prices and selection. Plus they usually have a bring in warranty, are located in all the major cities.

Though interdiscount is typically 10-15% more expensive than Digitec, sometimes they have one day sales where they drop the price by 50% for a particular model.

I bought my last laptop at such a sale. Fix a budget and watch their website.

Re: where can you buy a laptop that's not too expensive?

You might even have a look at ALDI. There are a couple of Aldi stores in Lausanne. The easiest to get to is at Malley.

They have a Chiligreen notebook 15.6" for CHF 459

A few details:

Pentium 2020M processor 2.4 Ghz
Windows 8
1366 x 768 screen
4 GB RAM
500 GB SATA drive
Webcam, Bluetooth, DVD burner
802.11 b/g/n
1 x USB 3.0, 2 x USB 2.0, 1 x VGA, 1 x RJ-45, 1 x HDMI, 1 x speaker

If you'd done the slightest bit of research you would know that CH is pretty much the cheapest place for electricals in Europe. Including laptops.

I don't know what you are looking at but I have yet to find a computing device in Switzerland that is cheaper in the US. Perhaps you can provide an example?

Not sure how you figure that out.

Base iPad retina is $499USD in the US.
Base iPad retina is 559CHF in the US.

559CHF is approx $590 USD, so in this example it is roughly %20 more expensive (I haven't tried to work it out and will wait to somebody correct me).

Apple products are far more expensive in CH than in the US. Always have been and I suspect always will be..
