It is very famous that they are using dirty words, shouting each other and public.
even very famous for the pick-pocketing .
very ugly .
I used to touch my Phone and wallet every and each time when i pass this area.

Re: Why so many Drunk people

The Kanton decided in 1978 that the best way to "toughen up" tourists to the uncomfortable fact that Switzerland is not all chocolate mountains, finishing schools and vast fields of cheese trees - was to employ a number of professional drinkers.

These patriotic individuals put them own health on the line by accepting free drinks from the kanton and consume them around Geneva train station. Entry into this elite establishment is very difficult and highly esteemed. Often you will find them shouting about their sacrifices late in the evening as their working day is coming to a finish.

Geneva isn't really part of Switzerland. We just let them think so.

Re: Why so many Drunk people

Try waiting for the bus at Graveson not even late in the evening, that's also full of "fuse box gone" characters! Police station nearby, but never saw a police officer out to reassure waiting passengers. As for tpg staff, they are invisible when it comes to protecting passengers. Oh dear, has this turned to another rant against TPG??

Re: Why so many Drunk people

I know the good ol' "it's way worse elsewhere" won't really cut it even though it is true.

I think the reason might be it is easier to keep all the trouble makers and annoying punks concentrated in one area, which seems to be la gare with the nearby Paquis.

Police to my knowledge cannot really do much, considering the old legislation. It is changing fast, in my small town, for example, a few mins from GE, the new approach has so far started cleaning up parks and station from the dealers. If there is political willingness to change stuff, it happens quite quickly. But the admin have to run through the changes through bunch of steps.

I don't think we need more cops or powers to them or TPG running after offenders. I think we might need some kind of rehab structures and organization of free time for drunkies who want to be clean. They need company and supervision. Just my 2c.

Re: Why so many Drunk people

I don't spend a lot of late nights hanging around the rail station, but I really have to say that day or night, the worst thing that I've ever seen in Geneva is some people selling hash or whatever. I feel 100% safe pretty much anywhere. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems to me that the drinking issues here are pretty minor compared to most comparably sized cities.

Thanks for the tip, but it's just too far to travel - really can't justify the time and expense.

I mean, dealers are dealing with prohibited drugs and so do criminal deeds, which means that the police can act.

But getting drunk and shouting around etc is not a criminal offence

1) go to the UK and you'll see that it is like this every night in city and town centres

2) you noob - never touch your phone or your wallet when going through a place like that - it shows the pickpockets where your valuables are... eejit.

Out of all the cities in the world where people drink, this is definitely one of them.

Re: Why so many Drunk people

Can't help sharing this story about a recent event in Geneva. It was my first time to visit there, as a friend of mine lives nearby in Ferney-Voltaire. Well! She took me to Java Club, which was fascinating. Full of young beautiful things (and even people) it was gorgeous, but at 20 francs for a coke, we were forced (not literally, just by thirst) to move on after one drink, to the Grand Duke pub, which was just closing, so we asked where else could we go, and someone recommended the Palais Mascotte.

Well, talk about a night of bad luck. We paid 15 francs entry and 3 francs for leaving a coat. The place looked heaving (busy!), but the minute we walked in the door, a couple of bouncers burst through the crowd to 'escort' someone outside. After they'd gone, I looked around for my friend but she was nowhere nearby. Then she got up from the ground a few metres away. She had been pushed to the ground by the bouncers! She got a terrible fright as she thought she was going to be trampled on. You should have seen the huge bruises on her arm the next day! Anyway, she was really upset so of course we decided to leave. The door people made a huge fuss about reimbursing us even though we explained what had happened. My friend wanted to talk to the manager, but the bouncer said we'd have to come back tomorrow. They just didn't care!

So then we left there and turned right and right, and anyone who knows that area will know where we were. A very seedy little street which seems to be the red light district!

I grew up in Dublin and used to walk through town at night past drunkards and others, but never felt threatened (maybe I was foolish) but I did this time! By the way, it was about 2am. There were prostitutes in windows and on the street, and lots of little gangs of guys, and I felt I was in a movie about sordid night life, with dodgy looking men everywhere, and we were the only women who weren't prostitutes! A guy tried to pick up my friend, and kept walking with us even tho I told him to buzz off. Anyway, I was so glad when we got out of that street! I was really surprised, because I'd always imagined Geneva was quiet, dignified and possibly boring!

I know this sounds a bit paranoid, it was probably just because my friend was a bit shaken up, but I just didn't feel comfortable!
