Scam lottery win

I got this message on my mobile phone this morning:

"your cell No won you £500,000 in NOKIA lottery, for claims call +27725651324 or email: nokkia@live.com"

Smelling a rat (perceptive or what ), I googled the telephone number and this is what I got:

http://www.419scam.org/emails/2006-05/31/543191.22.htm

I thought it would be my good deed for the day (indeed, for the month) to warn you. So,

You've been warned

Re: Scam lottery win

The scammers just get more persistent, don't they? I wonder...under which rock are the people hiding that are unaware of these types of scams? It does shock me that people still fall for these...

Don't you think there are people that still fall for that crap? Why would they do it in the first place? Just to satisfy the needs of the scammer-scammers (people that scam the scammers)? I would almost bet there is someone out there that answers to these scams (present company not included).

I've chatted up the phone scammers before. Made-up stories about bunions, my 13 cats, and school flashbacks... Usually, I get them to hang up within a few minutes. If I'm bored, its a fun diversion...

Hardly anyone falls for it, but the few people that do are stupid and desperate for money to the point where they will suspend all common sense. I would hazard a guess the members of this forum don't fall into that category.

These SMS's and emails are part of daily life and have been for many years now, so if you post this then you may as well start warning people about every Nigerian scam email you receive. Or maybe there should be some kind of dedicated thread where people can post them to their hearts content.

I can think of a few winners here...
But for the most part, a pretty sane group here.

Re: Scam lottery win

There was a radio DJ back in the states that used to play recordings of his conversations with cold call telemarketers. They were all really funny. One of the more memorable ones was when he asked a carpet cleaning company if their service would get out blood stains..."no, I mean like a lot of blood. can you come over right away please?"

The thing is they spelt Nokia with 2 kk, and I strongly object to spelling mistakes (unless I'm the one making them, obviously), so I didn't bother calling

Re: Scam lottery win

I received an email from a friend's email address recently, which was asking for money to be transfered urgently due to 'her having had her passport, wallet, etc stolen in London', which I ignored. The next day I received a shirty email from the same account asking if I had received the previous email and why hadn't I replied??!!

I went into the header of the second email and, lo and behold, there was the email address of the scammer ... English sounding male name with a gmail add ... to which I sent an email informing him that he had been reported to the police. Didn't hear another peep.

Hope you told your friend too. Maybe the account got hacked? Will these people never learn that their scams are a waste of time.
