It's that time again. If you can't get into Zurich you could get your own Pocket Böögg

Thanks for that!

I was hoping to take my two little ones (2 and 5). Any suggestions as to where is a good spot? And what time should we try to get to Zurich?

Get there early if you want a good spot and make sure you hang onto your kids and/or write your phone number on their arms in case you get separated. It gets totally packed with people milling around, although if it's raining people might stay away.

As "sechseläuten" suggests, it kicks off at 6pm then lasts as long as it takes the snowman to explode, which could be a while given the soaking the bonfire has had over the last couple of days. Perhaps they'll give it a helping hand with a bit more petrol, though.

Given that there is a new layout this year with the new square I would try the Opernhaus. There are steps leading up and I would try one near the top. This should give you a nice view onto the Böög without being too close. One word of advice though. It will be loud. There is firework built inside the head and this will explode. Maybe try to watch on youtube first with your kids to check if they are not afraid. The little one might as well be. Depending on the wind, there might be as well smoke being blown into your direction. But it is great fun and a nice experience. There is of course a lot more of a story behind it. But this is only really important if you visit the parade.

As you might have gathered, the snowman symbolises the winter and the myth says that the quicker the head explodes (note this is when the clock stops, not when it catches fire!), the better the summer.

The different guilds represent the traditional trades during the middle-age. Kämbel is the trade-men, hence the camel and the "black" faces. The guilds that have horses will ride around the fire during the time the snow-man burns (which will start at 6 pm as already has been pointed out and could last roughly 20 minutes given the weather).

Hope that helps If you need more information check my older post with regard to this subject

Re: Parade time for Sechselaeuten? ZH

WOW, you'd think it would be easy, but this was quite a task, like you said yourself!

I just tried to find it myself and have come to the assumption that it must be any time at or after 4PM. According to this article here, SRF (the Swiss Television Channel) is starting to broadcast live from the festivites from 3.35PM onwards today. So it must be any time after that, as at 6PM they start the official fire around the "Böögg".

Hope this helps... I can't believe they can't be more specific about the start time - I even tried the main page www.sechselaeuten.ch but it seems down or overloaded...

SRF1 seem to have the feed blocked outside Switzerland. It has been OK previously. Zattoo doesn't seem to have a link to it either

The Böögg exploded in 7 minutes 23 seconds - we're in for a scorching summer, folks.

Re: sechseläuten in Zurich - times?

Let's hope that's true as the last couple of summers have been mediocre at best (3 weeks at 35C, and 15C and rain for the rest of the time )

But I don't exactly believe in the Böögg and when I look out the window right now, summer seems to be far far away

Re: sechseläuten in Zurich - times?

A little update on this: we arrived in Zurich just after 1530, and got an okay spot on the Limmatquai. Despite the fine drizzle, the boys were happy looking at the horses, costumes and seemed to enjoy themselves.

We stayed in Zurich till 1730 and arrived home just in time to see the Boogg being blown to smithereens.

Thanks very much for sharing the map and all other information. In the end I decided it was better for the kids to watch the finale at home; tired, cold and bored kids are best avoided.

Mum watched it each year, between about 1970 and 2007. She enjoyed the reports, the interviews, to see what local promis were around etc

Yes, summer is now officially cancelled. Expecting travel agents to have a busy day tomorrow.

Trollefar and the Troll went down to see it, but came back an hour later drenched and frozen (so much for people from Western Norway being experts at wearing weather appropriate clothing). Watched it on tv with the windows open so we could hear the explosions better.
