Zurich 25 to 40 years ago back then thread..

This tread for all those who are here over 20 years plus and not from Switzerland. Please share your experiences , your stories no matter which part of the world you came from and how you got here and how was it like back then,? what changed and what not, how was the ease of work without such long processes , how was it to come and live back then ? Any memories and incidents are welcome from the " Back in time " days.

I moved here in 1987 from the USA with a mountain bike. I was apparently one of the first to have one here, as people were staring at me as if I was in a spaceship. It was fun biking down the bahnhofstrasse feeling like I was driving a Ferrari

I felt the same in the early 1990's with rollerblades. I never saw anyone with them. I maintain that I was singlehandedly responsible for introducing them to Switzerland.

Or why not ask Wollishofener directly

He was the first to do/see/hear/try everything around here as I understand things...

Why only Zurich? I've lived in Genèva since 1973.

When I moved here to be with my girl friend in 1960 I brought with me, as a tourist, £100. This converted to almost CHF1200. I walked around Zurich for six weeks , completely naive about everything. Then thanks to a chance question I found a Job paying CHF 880. My room in the Rotbuchstrasse cost 90 per month so I was on a good deal!

How much were you earning in the UK when you came? £100 was probably nearly a month after tax earnings.

And I moved here in '86 with an Italian motorcycle with US plates, an AT-clone, and a '61 Les Paul. Other than the AT-clone, I still have the rest.

Re: Zurich 25 to 40 years ago back then thread..

Back in them days- I moved here in '85 directly from a 6 month stay in Southend - I don't think anyone had ever seen the "white stilletto and miniskirt dress code and hence many an uncomfortable stare on my first nite out to go clubbing in Zurich! OMG what was I thinking.

At least one could park at the back of the Oliver Twist , Niederdorf for a speedy escape though!

My rent hasn't changed since '94, but my salary has gone up 50% or so in the same timeframe.

Re: Zurich 25 to 40 years ago back then thread..

For me the biggest difference between 1989 when I arrived and now is electronic communication.

A phone call with the PTT Swiss monopoly was CHF0.30/minute off peak - and 7pm to 9pm was high rate, just when everyone wanted to call.

There was CNN and the ineptly named Super Channel in English. The remaining 30 channels were in foreign.

Radio in English was only from BBC World Service on shortwave. Now I listen to 'Today' on Radio 4 every morning and Eastenders at night and Skype my folks whenever I want...

1989 = no internet, no private radio or TV here ... only, in the 1990ies you had Videotex

Pardon me? I had Internet back in 1982, and that even out in the sticks of Heidiland.
