| | Does anyone knows the cost of a Dentist appointment in Bern Area
Hello
I would like to know if anyone knows the cost of an appointment with a Dentist in Bern. I got braces already and i just want to keep the maintenance and to see if everything is going good with the process with the braces.
Does someone knows the cost with health insurance included.
Thank you in advance |

I only know about Geneva, where a basic dentist appointment of about 15 minutes can cost between 80 and 150 depending on the dentist. Same for the hygienist (but the appointment's longer).
It's doubtful that your insurance would cover you if the treatment had already started before your arrival here. Otherwise basic insurance refunds peanuts, dental insurance is avaliable (they'll often exclude certain teeth if they're already filled for example) and the cover varies so you'd need to check with your insurance company.

I don't think braces will be covered under normal dental insurance. You normally have to have orthodontic cover for that and you won't be able to get that if you already have braces.

I have a colleague who went to Bahnhofplatz 10A 3011 Bern - it is like a clinic where there are a group of dentists, called Zahnarztzentrum.
Assuming that you are going just for consultation, then it is around 90 CHF per 15 min., and possibly first visit it may take you 30 min at least.
My colleague told me as well that first few times you will need to pay in Cash until they trust you then they can send you the bill , not sure if he looked un-trustable or this is the common rule there.
Hope all will go well with your teath.

It may be worth checking the University hospital (Inselspital) in Bern as their dental clinic does take patients. See link below: http://www.zmk.unibe.ch/content/pati...index_ger.html
I don't know price wise whether they are slightly cheaper than a private dentist but I am happy with the job they do (granted I only go and see a dental hygienist but still...)

Dentists can charge what they like. You need to phone them first.

See here (sorry, not available in English). And a proper diagnosis plus treatment plan and quotation over the phone is hardly ever possible.
Differences between dentists are not caused by them charging what they like. The estimates may substantially differ due to the fact than one dentist says you have an initial lesion in the enamel that will need some attention again next year, while the dentist next door may use an intraoral video camera to blow that minute dot up to the size of a pothole and say you urgently need a crown.

Fr. 5.80, kein Mindestpreis
- for private patients (most of us have no dental insurance) there is no minimum price, the maximum is Fr 5.80 per tax point.
This means that the dentist can choose his tariff, which is just about the same as stating "charging what he likes"
If you want to avoid an expensive dentist, you need to telephone before making the appointment.
This dentist is cheaper, but I cannot recommend him! Marc Frei Dr. med. dent. Mitgl. SSO. Werkgasse 2, 3018 Bern

Just like pretty much everything in Switzerland, the TPW is a matter of strictly regulated calculations that must be done for every practice individually, depending on running expenses, range of services offered, and quite a few other factors. Whenever an invoice is contested before a cantonal Honorarprüfungskommission (dental fee examination and settlement commission), the TPW applied must be justified by the dentist.
Besides that, anything below a TPW of CHF 3.10, the standard for insurance cases, is absolutely unprofitable. So no, dentists can't charge what they like.
TPW can make a difference, but the decision as to what has to be done can make a difference that may be ten or even fifty times bigger. So you need a phone call for an appointment anyway, but asking about the TPW won't give you any useful information. Asking around may help.
