Are the Swiss really not into the Eurovision Song Contest?

I know that CH was not selected into the finals, but where were the "Kitsch" parties, the "Dress up 1970s and bring food that can only be eaten out of a tin" parties, the "0-12 points" themed parties...in other words, celebrations of Europe's best "trashy" songs?

Baaah, we'll have to organise our own next year!

Still, there were some decent songs this year (Greece, Malta, the Netherlands...) Romania certainly beat everyone in terms of weirdness, Belgium wins hand up in the "worse choregraphy ever", and poor old Bonnie Tyler did her best, and we gave her a big cheer, but wearing old rags round your waist is a no no for the Eurovision glam and glitter. Mind you, Azerbaijan's guy is the only one who can claim to wear a suit with a tracksuit bottom and still finish third or so!

It was genuinely awful, as usual, but great fun! Geneva, shall we have a Eurovision party next year??

Malta was quite good, and the Netherlands. But were never going to win - not bland enough.

Re: Romania. Graham Norton said "Just because you can do something, it doesn't mean you should".

People do that kind of things ? That's really strange.

I guess it's not really in our (swiss) mentality...

Yep, Britannia did once rule the Eurovision c**p test... which is why they are still mad for it Hang up from the days they had about 1 chance in 3 of winning everytime - ahhh nostalgia. We Swiss don't go for all this kitsch stuff (because we've never ever been even close to winning...)

Ahahaha can't remember the 56 one- we certainly didn't have a telly I can assure you (my parents got their first telly in 70 - it was very quiet at home after I'd left for the UK with one bro in Argentina and one in Grenoble )

and since when is Céline Dion Swiss???

Probably since the same time that Katrina was waving the Union Flag.

At a rough guess, just looking at folks' names, at least half the folk who win anything under the Swiss flag are, at best, half Swiss and half Alien. If the Swiss can get someone to sing for them, and they win, it's a Swiss win!

Furthermore, there are other folks involved in a song's performance, too. E.g. authors, which btw. was Nella Martinetti.

Don't underestimate the Swiss' pride, just because they don't write it on their flags.

Re: Are the Swiss really not into the Eurovision Song Contest?

I've never "got" Eurovision even when Terry Wogan tried to make it cool in an ironic way. Saw a bit of it last night and decided Graham Norton actually enjoyed it, which totally ruined his commentary.

But then I'm neither intellectual nor cultural

Re: Are the Swiss really not into the Eurovision Song Contest?

Eurovision means Celine Dion and Peter, Paul and Mary. It brings back good memories of the days when there was some top quality songs being played by Swiss artists. Nowadays, the Swiss expect nothing more than losing before the finals or 0 points. How can one get excited about that?

And, to top it off, the Swiss aren't into camp whereas the British make comedy shows out of it. Sven Epiney is no Graham Norton.

I first went to UK in 1970 - to see Hendrix and the Stones at the Isle of Wight. Now that was worth it

Re: Are the Swiss really not into the Eurovision Song Contest?

We had a family from Switzerland in our company for some hours yesterday. The topic of the Eurovision lasted all of 5 / 10 minutes maximum.
Some countries spend a lot of money on their presentation. Have seen better years. Some countries deliberately don't try too hard, as can't afford to put the event on if they win.
