Had quite a nice afternoon after all- then in all darkened and had a bit of Donner und Blitzen- then all cleared again. Blue skies and wind has totally dropped now, as sun sets.

This is potentially catastrophic train of events. The rotation of a low pressure system by 360 deg is causing two fronts to fuse and enhance very strongly the rainfall. One of those phenomenons happened in 1997 in Polish Sudety mountain range resulting in up to 120mm of rainfall for 12h (totaling at 300-600 mm during few days). This caused a flooding called "The once in a 100 years flood" resulting in record high water level measurements on Odra river. Many cities along Odra were flooded, not to mention villages without dykes.

In Switzerland the effect can be even stronger due to an orthography.

Sorry. It is the effect of mountains on the path of humid air. The air is rising on the slopes very rapidly (additionally to a normal thermal updraft ) which causes the water vapor to condense very quickly resulting in higher than normal rainfall (comparing to , for example, plains).

Are you sure 'orthography' is the right word though???

Called 'Le Joran' on Lake Neuchâtel, Bienne and Morat, and Le Vaudaire on Lake Leman- when the air cools quickly at the end of the day in the Jura or the Alps, and it's still warm by the lake, the vacuum created can be extremely violent and happen very fast- and are true killers for anyone on the lake in a boat or windsurf, etc. On lake Neuchâtel there are warning lights- which are too often ignored by non local people, with tragic results.

It's raining so much this morning even the slugs have had enough. There were two big fat ones trying to get in through the front door just now when hubby and son opened it to go to work/school.
