| | Re: What is the Cost of living in Zurich? | Quote: | | | | | Thanks for the Information. Do you know how easy it is to get a apartment for rent in these areas and the average prices for a 2 bed room apartment? | | | | | Hi there,
Moved here a little bit longer than a year ago, even though I found it quite easy to find my 2-bedroom apartment, I was told by many others, that they were going through blood and sweat to find what they were looking for (expectations too high or funds not available for their places related were most issues reasons).
I'm between Zurich City and Altstetten (which I still call pretty central), and pay almost Sfr 1500.- for my 2-bedroom apartment, everything incl. apart from the obvious (telephony, internet etc.) which is really quite a good deal.
I was informed upon getting the flat, that I won over approx. 135 interests, which makes this quite the hunt. So be prepared that it might not be the easiest of tasks, but sometimes you're the lucky winner to find quite a good offer for investing time into it...
Good Luck!
Swissy

| | Re: USA Resident, and can no longer live under this government | Quote: | | | | | Interesting. Here in Chicago (in the city proper), one would be considered to be "struggling" anywhere below $20K... but I know people that live happily, full bellies and even drive cars with salaries not much more than that. Anywhere above that, and you are considered doing well. Interesting... I read on swissworld.org that the poverty line is at 2,200 francs per month. | | | | | Lots of people think they can live on a low salary, but when you apply for an apartment, you may not get any offers. The landlord will think that if you get short of money you may not pay him. It is very difficult to find an apartment in Zurich, low salary will put you at the bottom of the pile if you are luck, otherwise in the bin.

I hope that it is not above 1750CHF, since that what I will survive on this autumn. But then I will try to live in a WG and probably not be eating too much meat... |

Hi all,
I'm going to move to Zurich too, and I need too some advices about the cost living.
My job offer is 120K CHF, we are 3, I and my wife and little little baby.
The office is in centre but we'd like to find an apartment in Thalwil / Horgen.
No crazy shopping, No Car and quite normal life.
What do you think? Which is the expectation with those parameters?
Thanks in advance

You don't think 3,000 a month left over is okay? So long as you're not extravagant you should be fine as Wallabies said.
Your calculations may be wrong. If you earn 120k or more you pay your tax by filling in a tax return each year, not through withholding tax. I don't know what Zurich taxes are, but my OH makes less than 120k, has a C permit, and he takes home more than you've calculated.

3000 left over is much more than "just OK", especially since food cost is already deducted. The large majority of people have about half of that. Yes, with a family.

Believe me with 3000 chf left per month you and your spouse could even afford cultivating a few expensive hobbies - travelling, concerts, sports etc.

Your husband has to pay tax on his take home so I would expect it to be higher.

So will he if he's earning over 120k.
And yes, Fribourg isn't as expensive as Zurich so we do fine. |

Thank you all for your feedback.
@greenmount, I asked because I spent a lot of time reading threads in the forum and there is a really big discrepancy between a post and another one about money-quality life-cost living.
I mean, some days 120K CHF are few for a normal life, other they are enough.
I lived in Italy, UK and now in Germany and what I can say is that after tax, rent, food, insurance there is no country in EU where you can save quasi 2600€.
Of course if you are an executive/director this assumption is N/A.
I'm 33, IT Engineer and respect of my colleagues in EU, with these figures I will above the standard.
Respect the Swiss one, I will in average.
Anyway, let's see what happen.
Thank you again
