Anyone using Audible?

I guess I have seen their ads on facebook but never looked into what it is. Now I was shopping for a kid's audio book to listen to on our upcoming drive to Austria and I stumbled upon it.

Anyone out there use them? Personally I have never listened to an audiobook - or at least not recently, but my sister recently went on a trip with her friend's family and the kids were really into it.

If you do use it, do you have a membership, or buy "a la carte"?

It might just beat listening to "Gangnam Style" and One Direction ad naseum

Re: Anyone using Audible?

Audio books are great for traveling, not just with kids but when you are driving. I used to do alot of driving in my work and if it was going to take longer than an hour i would always have them. Better than dvd's as even when your driving you can still listen and not be distracted. Pretty much all of the audi books i have are audible and i can't say they are any different to the others. I would say get the abridged versions as they are often shorter, cheaper and you don't miss anything.

Re: Anyone using Audible?

I use audible quite a bit, and I like it-I got the monthly membership, as that pretty closely matches how quickly I can get through an audiobook. Good quality audiobooks and it's very easy to set up.

Hope this helps!

Re: Anyone using Audible?

I use Audible a lot. Big choice of titles and easy to use on all the various devices they support.

I have the one book a month subscription and still find myself building up credits.

The good thing is that if you really don't like a book, you can easily return it and get your credit back.

A bad thing is that sometimes on very recent or big name titles you get a message saying that the book is not available in my location. This has happened twice for me. Once for Dan Brown and once for JK Rowling.

Overall though - It's great.

I love audiobooks. Perfect for traveling by car and for walking.

Audible offers a great choice and quality but is relatively expensive.

Not audible books but a huge resource of free stories for children - my eldest is addicted. You can download them as podcasts onto an ipod or phone for when you are on the go.

Re: Anyone using Audible?

Can anyone tell me exactly how Audible works?

On Amazon I read that you can listen to the audio book, then swap devices and continue where you left off reading, or vice-versa.

Is it possible to read the book on my Kindle while simultaneously listening to the audio on my iPhone? I want to read in German and French, whilst listening to the audio to make sure I get the pronunciations correct, but I'm not sure that this is possible. Also, does it work on a Kindle eReader or just the tablet Kindles?

Thanks

Not sure if I'm answering your question, but I once set up the Audible and Kindle apps on my phone to run at the same time so I could read Richard III while listening to it. It worked a treat!

But when you download a book on Audible, do you get the text version in the Kindle app? Or do you have to purchase that separately?

They're two separate apps, so they're two different files to download.

Re: Anyone using Audible?

If you buy a book on Audible, you won't get the kindle version unless you buy it too, although sometimes you can get the kindle version cheaper if you already have the audible version (or is it the other way around)?

Audible works on your computer, iphone, android (i think), and you can use the kindle app on iphone and ipad - so it need not be a kindle. I think that "whisper sync" allows you to sync audio book with kindle so you can go back and forth.

If you choose an audible account, make sure you get either the US or UK account for the best selection of English language books.

Thanks. Actually, I want it more for language learning, so access to German and French books is more important..... surprised though that Amazon wouldn't make all books available everywhere.

Nope.... apparently there are licensing restrictions across different countries. Not a lot, but not everything is available everywhere.

Re: Anyone using Audible?

Have you checked with a local library? I use OverDrive to download books for free.
