Hi chalk paint fans,
Can you recommend a product here in Switzerland that you can use to prevent bleed-through with chalk paint?
I bought an old desk, probably from the 1930s, that has an oil stain finish. It bled through my first coat of chalk paint, and everyone on the internet agrees that the best solution is to coat it with 1-2 layers of shellac. I couldn't find the American product recommended online, but I got "Shellack Politur" from Farbhof on Forchstrasse in Zürich. Two coats of this "Shellack Politur" and another coat of chalk paint later, and the old finish is still bleeding through.
Two more possibilities:
- Do you know where I can buy shellac flakes? I understand that the best ones are made in Germany, but I haven't found them yet.
- Do you know of a stain-blocking primer like Kilz that I could use?
I don't often miss home, but damn, I'd like to go to Home Depot right now.
By the way, I bought my chalk paint at 26 Rose Garden
, Rosengartenstrasse 26, 8037 Zürich. It's an adorable store with lots of distressed, chalk-painted furniture and lovely home accessories. I also recommend Farbhof, Forchstrasse 37, 8032 Zürich for paint brushes. The ones I bought at Migros Do-It -- supposedly their highest quality -- were very disappointing.
Thanks so much for your help and advice.
