Aldi currently has a hand steam cleaner for 20-odd francs - whereas the Karcher hand steamer is over 100.
For any job small enough to use a hand steamer, the Aldi version works just fine.

I once bought a Casio that was advertised as genuine for $7 on eBay. It sells for 10-15 Euros in Europe, so that price from China didn't seem too suspicious.
I got it and it looked genuine indeed... but then lost 30 to 60 seconds each *day*. If you're in Switzerland where public transportation is punctual, that's not good
I expressed my concerns to the seller and asked if it was really genuine, and he refunded immediately (I hadn't even asked for that!). Bought another from Amazon and it's flawless, even after months. | | | | | I had exactly the same experience - bought what appeared to be a genuine Casio digital watch on eBay but it couldn't keep time. What amazed me is that it's actually worth making a fake version of a $15 watch and selling it for $7.

Those components cost nothing and a readily available - so how does one make an electronic watch that doesn't keep time? I thought they'd be rather digital - either they work or they don't...

I bought my wife a budget Swiss watch once in Bahnhoffstrasse- a few hundred francs rather than a few thousand.
It never kept time either despite us returning it a couple of times to get it 'fixed'.
I would have rather spend $7 on a watch that kept bad time as it wouldn't have felt so bad to chuck it in the bin.

Wow.
What was the brand and model? How out of time was it per week?

Throwing it in the bin certainly seems like a rather final solution.

Reselling it would be really nasty. The only nastier thing would be giving it away as a present.

All automatic watches lose or gain time every day, how much depends on the accuracy of the movement inside. Usually 20 seconds or so, and every movement has a rated tolerance. If it's outside of that, as Tom's apparently was you have grounds for a replacement or refund.
Sounds to me like he didn't follow up on the warranty options as fully as he could and demand a replacement, and instead just chucked it away out of frustration.

I think you people have lost the point of my post which was that it's not just the cheapest watches that may not keep time. Conversely, cheap watches can keep very good time.
Buy an expensive watch because you like the look of it (or are investing) but not because it will keep better time.

You don't generally buy expensive automatic watches to "keep better time" (although of course more expensive automatic movements can give better accuracy), you buy them because you appreciate the watches and the engineering that goes into them. The one you bought, if running a few minutes out per week, was likely faulty and out of spec. |
