hunt for tiger mosquitoes in Switzerland

In case you have not heard about it or read it on swiss info or elsewhere, I wanted to share this with you all.

Have you heard about tiger mosquitoes?

They are recognised by their black and white striped legs and bodies. They are known to transmit viruses such as dengue fever, yellow fever or the West Nile virus. They are natives of South East Asiabut were discovered in Switzerland (Ticino) the first time in 2003. They are brought into the country in cars, exotic plants and even the trade with used car tires.

Swiss authorities have started to the "hunt" for the tiger mosquitoes and have set up 250 traps for female tiger mosquitoes to lay their eggs there. The goal of this action is to find out where the tiger mosquito spreads and to subsequently fight against it.

No need to panic, it's simply about being informed.

Re: hunt for tiger mosquitoes in Switzerland

We have them here in Barcelona... they are small and quite fast. Much harder to swat than their larger cousins in CH and the US. They seem to like me and the worst thing(s) about them; they seem to bite several times before finding the "right" spot and the bites itch like crazy!

After the Processional caterpillars, I find them to be the next worst critter here...

Hope they can wipe them out in CH before they spread further!

Hated those things! We had them at my house in the US!

I think I saw them in Italy when we were there over the summer... I really hope they don't follow me up here in norther CH!

Re: hunt for tiger mosquitoes in Switzerland

Got three of the feckers in our room this morning. Smallest was young, got that with the fly swat.

The other two had gorged themselves so much, they were slow and easy to get with hands and both splattered blood everywhere when taken out...

Don't think they were tigers, which look pretty distinct!

Re: hunt for tiger mosquitoes in Switzerland

The way the mosquitoes were going for me in Switzerland this year, this is the last thing I want to see

(If they are carrying all those diseases, it might be)

They are rife in steamy Malta at the moment and the little bleeders just love me, resulting in huge, painful, fluid-filled swellings, about 10cms across

I know that Sutter loves Tigers. Perhaps she was attracting them into her garden while I was there
