Re: Shout out to...Message Board

Quote:
Nope. It doesn't matter how many time you say it, or how much I read the explanations, I still don't get what you're trying to say with this 'shout-out' concept. What about your big brother? Who is "we" and what did you want to get him for? Does he actually read EF? If not, wouldn't it make more sense to actually say something, you know, like using normal words or something?
I think the "shout out" thing has been covered in earlier posts. Something akin to early 1990s 'Steve Wright In The Afternoon' "zany" plaudits for various people and their every day mundane or otherwise achievements. Motivation thing?

The Big Brother connection - don't know. Ratted out some NSA/secret police cell maybe?

EDIT: Here you go...

Quote:
Big Shout Outs: Listeners send Steve messages via text or email. If the message is sensible and entertaining it may be read out. The likelihood of your message being read on air is greatly increased, if a phrase such as "Absolutely loving the Big Show" is included in the message. This feature is particularly enjoyed by bored workmen, spoof messages are often sent on behalf of their colleagues.
From here.

Big thumbs up to an expedition of blind cyclists (CZ) who after 2400km reached the arctic pole a few days ago. Their goal is to promote the world golbal championship in Finland this year.

Definitely big shout out to all the fellow students and all the fellow teachers, no matter what they are studying or teaching! Beginning of a new school year is an exciting moment.

This year I manage to be a student and a teacher at the same time!

Exciting... Well, I'm juggling with the teaching, the studying and 3 kids, including a newborn, so I'm not so sure...

Welcome in the club, you will cope, I promise.

I actually love the studying-teaching combo, have done it with all my degrees, makes both studying and teaching faster, more efficient, better quality. As long as you are not studying something completely unrelated. Basket weaving, but that we also do, in our Stitch and Bitch, hahahah.

Btw, I know it is hard with kids in tow, but realize, they are learning to be at least as efficient as you are.

I know I'm a bit late in adding to this conversation, but...

A shout out is like an internet version of this -

shout-out-message-board-14-june-colton-corina-martinez.jpg

(For the record I just found those online, I have no idea who is connected with either of those pictures.)

Even though many people will read it and have no idea who the person is or what is going on... somewhere out there, someone gets it and is appreciating the fact that someone would so publically draw attention to them. Names don't really have to be mentioned because it's more of a, "You know who you are" thing. Though on the radio, they tend to say who is calling and who the shout out is for to avoid confusion.
And no, maybe the people that are getting a shout out may not be members of EF right now and they may not see it right away (until someone tells them). But it's kind of nice to know that even if you weren't aware, someone was bragging about you to complete strangers.

Now if the shout out is negative... same idea, different result.

Thanks, ComingHome, fabulous. Yes, that's exactly it. Just a note, folks did understand what a shout out is, but were amused by poking fun at it. It's exactly what you wrote

Shout out to my fellow bootcampers, we are moving with our dissertations, and need as much tlc and support as one can get since it really is a pita to pull off full time work, family, studies and gazillions of other stuffs. Guys, if anyone shoots for advanced degrees, do that before you turn like...25.

Big shout out to my mom who has just defended another diss and passed her finals a few days ago. Leader of the pack.

I am trying to figure out a good graduation gift for an adventurous scientist, but don't really know...I thought ukulele would be awesome, I think I am going to go for it. I was going to get her a dress and heels for the ceremony, might get that, too. With this amazing ukulele I just saw today.

But hey, congrats, this is indeed impressive.

Melu, Sky, you are moving. Keep moving. Women are known for perseverance and long distance endurance. You will complete your program, it is just a matter of prioritizing and time. And then you will miss it when you are done and your mind will be occupied figuring out other ambitious missions.

I am moving slow pace but steadily, I think I wouldn't have absorbed so much if I did things fast and if I had it easy. Shout out to fellow lone soldiers.

Shout out to my RL pacting study buddy, who just took a really hard exam she had to prepare for the last 12 months.

And - a shout out to my little brother who has defended his dissertation. I still have a way to go but heading there, steadily.

Thumbs up to all who are achieving their goals, little by little...
